Studios

If there is one thing I have had no shortage of it would be studio space. Every one has it’s own feel and atmosphere, sometimes wide open, sometimes closed in. I spent nearly 3 months of my life in an old run down, yet still operational warehouse/industrial space in the middle of the prairie, during a rather frigid Canadian winter painting a cosmic space bus. I spent 3 months on Maui, and eventually made a bunch of things there that were completely infused with the energy and rhythms of that place. One of the advantages of being anonymous, so to speak, is I can go to cool places and do my thing and hardly anyone notices until that is I get discovered and than I simply move on. I have spent most of my life living under the radar and in some ways the advantages if that outweigh the pressure of conforming to a certain style or technique, or pleasing the gallery I am with, or keeping the collectors happy, that is superfluous to making art. Every space/environment I make art in opens my mind to so many interesting and beautiful possibilities, and this can be a blessing when the fear is kept at bay. Werner Fassbinder made a film about, ‘Fear eats the Soul’, does it not?
