life

Someone said to me that we live in strange times. Funny though, when weren’t the times strange? It is easy to romanticise about the good old days. When you really look at the past there has been strangeness all along. We have fought in many many wars. We have experienced pandemics and plagues that wiped out large numbers of the population. There have been brutal dictators who took the lives of millions, all in the name of power and fame, or is it infamy. Humans as a lot have been particularly brutal to our Mother Earth, putting themselves above that which provide life for them. This is not just at the hands of the industrialists, it’s you and I, it’s everyone. We drive cars everyday. We jet set to get away form our lives, only finding we have to return to them. We consume goods like no ones business for pleasure; the insatiable need to taste the riches of our own individual successes. None of this is good or bad, it is just what we have done collectively, and collectively we have been swayed by our own arrogance, an ego shell in the form of the roles we play. But wait. There is human qualities that also have allowed us to endure even the hardest and darkest hours on this tiny blue and green dot. We are a resilient bunch, we have overcome so many obstacles and celebrated life when time permits. We praise thee God, the gods, the Creator, the thing that makes this this. We have weathered storms since the beginning of time and before time was time. Now time has stood on its head, by a virus, an obstacle, a messenger, perhaps even a prophet. Days that flew by now take a little longer, things slowing down, this translating into boredom for some. No doubt it would appear that our lives before the pandemic became intertwined with the global economy, codependent on each other to sustain. The desire to always be driven forward, never time to think about, let alone be in the present moment. The present moment an eternity, unchanging, true being, the I house. Nothingness that everything, all this stuff, passes through, coming and going, yet here the I am remains. It is a time to celebrate this life, rediscover our true self, put down our judgements, our guards, a rebirth of cool. Soon calm will follow after the storm. Now let the mind be free.

Note: These are my thoughts and shared thoughts of fellow humans that I have been resonating with during the last few weeks, I have experienced intermittent moments of anger and rage over the things outside of me, outside of my control. Perhaps we all have. We all have our way of dealing or not dealing with that which we face. I have found the hardship and the suffering have opened my heart up. Similar to the lake ice melting, I can hear the cracks, the booms, slowly opening up again after many years of struggle. Thank you Earth, Thank you family, and thank you friends. Thank you. We will be ok. Breathe.

the sun and the city dream

It’s a lonely journey towards the sun

with all my love I carry on

farther I travel into this desert of space

this anger, the sorrow

I put aside

burdens lift

drifting effortlessly

the mind settles

a still pond

fotoMahaloness

I often walk alone on this journey, spending hours alone, working away in my tiny studio, immersed in my craft, my art, steadfast in flow. Here I paint my pictures, no other soul in sight, and quite often late into the night.

This is a painting I am currently working on lit from behind. There is a portrait underneath that was something I lost enthusiasm for, and for various the other reasons that shall remain a mystery. It’s interesting backlit, ghostly you could say.

I have been a tourist in my own city, roaming around documenting the growth, the movement, and the flux. I find the city to be a lonesome place, all these structures, many only partly occupied, people in transit moving from one tower to th next,  this is an ongoing series I call, citylife.

hälts minimotion

‘the city I call home (urban tourist)’ 🎥 new hälts minimotion with soundscape ‘the discovery of something new’ featuring a bunch of footage gathered along a walk in the city I call home, and a few bits of a studio sesh working on a relatively new painting you could say. ❤️ much respect to all who make this journey bright ❤️

Inside the studio

A space always in flux, where happiness, sorrow, and all that falls in between, flows into an ocean of creativity, no other place I’d rather be.

minimotions in 3

Thought I would take a second and post some of my minimotions up for your viewing pleasure. These are a few of my one minute videos I put together spontaneously for Instagram, without overthinking things, and for the fun of it. I have been combining studio sesshin SLO mos and timelaspe footage with Nature footage. I work in the film industry from time to time, which takes me to stunning locations, which I usually gather timelapse footage for content, and I go to B.C. Interior and spend a lot of my time chasing around eagles and gathering timelapse and video footage there as well. Before my life as a painter I was passionate about film and have made sure to keep my passion up for the motion picture by making these minis, along with my experimental soundscapes. The advent of digital technology and innovation has made it possible to make a motion picture experience, however it is the content that makes the experience. It is quite amazing what one can do with very little, one iPad and my feet, hands and I suppose my eyes and ears…. anyway for now sit back and enjoy my little creations.

mimimotion a la Mahaloness

‘found in la paint’ 🖌 a late night minimotion special feature with soundscape ‘life goes on’ with some footage I compiled today while in process and some outdoors timelapse including the street where my mural on hillhurst hardware has beamed for the last 7 years, wowzas 🙀 and I’m growing old, anyhoot I went to enjoy my old work over a bowl of ramen at Ikemen Ramen bar in Kotwn, Calgary Alberta Canada

‘Rocky Mountain high’ 🏔 new minimotion with soundscape ‘let’s shoot it’ featuring between the scenes footage gathered in the mountains on a recent gig, and a little bit of my art mixed in, rocky mountain high, up up to the sky

‘artist hiatus’ 🎥 new minimotion with soundscape ‘when in nature’ featuring a Dali analog animation I did for a zoetrope, analog not digital, and an eagle soaring, cloud timelapse and a pink dusk, one of my painting WIPs in thermal, a hotspring and a sunset over the Purcells, all footage is from the interior BC except the animation, danka🌲

there is a place I like to go

I could settle for trends, or copy other styles….I have thus far chosen not to go down that path, for better or worse, it is something I have managed to bypass. This can make it difficult when it comes to my work being accepted in the now, it takes time to develop a style, it takes patience and perseverance to overcome doubt and the fear. It is imperative to not give in to these factors, and have faith that somehow it will work out. It is also a good idea to get out of the studio from time to time and recharge the soul, the mind, and the heart space.

fotoMahaloness and a minimoiotn 🎥

‘towards silence’ 👂 a new minimotion with soundscape ‘cat dreams’ from busy city to a mountain peace, I find myself on a road less travelled, where clouds drift gracefully, putting mind at ease, I hope you like it, and well ✌️

‘therianthropica’ WIP in the studio, where walls melt away and recollections stream in

There is something to be said for slowing things down and letting things happen, everything happening just as it is supposed to without interfering the natural cycle, and allowing the artist within to be

still frame from minimotion me going at it in the studio

These are some panoramas of a place I go to in B.C. to disconnect from city life and remind myself that there is a whole other world going on, this place, this planet, provides us with so much and yet there are some who want to continue to do harm in the name of economy, and growth, with little to no plan for the consequences which you and I will pay for. So I am grateful for these moments, when it’s just me and the eagles, the clouds, the water, sky, and the trees, and all of the sounds, the wind as it dances though the trees, the sounds of ravens free falling, oh what a gift, so I come here and pay my respects, because there’s no guarantees it will last.

dream within a dream

Is this life but a dream within a dream

Wondering

What does it all mean

Walking down endless city sidewalks

sparkling like diamonds

Alone in a city of a million

The smell of lilacs

overwhelms the illusion

That fills our lives

And holds us back

From being who we truly are

Push on my good friends

Push on

For the sun shall shine again

And for a brief moment time will stand still

Take it in with a grin

And thank your lucky stars

sky shark

It’s been a active month and a bit for hälts, similar to the ocean with endless corduroy lines, there is a plethora of waves to ride. Ideas have been coming to hälts, sharks swimming in the sky, all seeing eyes watching whales gliding through the cosmos, in an effort to bring some awareness to our ocean friends who we share space with on this blue and green planet called Earth. There is a grea documentary called Sonic Sea, it details a few human related impacts on marine wildlife and offers solutions to this growing problem, and considering we get one planet to live on, it is our responsibility to take care of it as best we can. In his search for meaning hälts has come to realize it is his mission to be a voice for the planet and all its beings, the following images are a reflection of this.

the whales are calling

I was walking down a path, immersed in my own thoughts, wondering where they came from.

💚with respect to the title please check out www.sonicsea.org and enlighten yourself on the current state of our oceans, I think you might be surprised as to whats happening with our ocean inhabitants and friends, that is directly correlated to human input, and it’s not plastic, it’s related to sound.

fotoMahaloness
Lately hälts has been very active, completely immersed in the creative act, and in between working on ideas, acting, some sleeping, and translating the dream into reality, and he tries to make time to write this blog. The content is changing and morphing which is fascinating to watch unfold, as he gets that much closer to finding his voice. The search has led hälts to forests, lakes, rivers, the ocean, the sky, the stars, outwards to the cosmos, and below Earths crust. There is a time when any artist has to face themselves and ask what is it I am doing, a self check up, so to make sure that he or she, or both, is on the right path. In a world where there is billions of opinions, stories, agendas, and strategies, it is key to stick to your path, and only waver when necessary, and remember fear is your friend, when all the signs say ‘go’ you go, and whatever happens will likely surprise you both.

restless spirit

It has been a bit since I sat down a wrote some words so here goes….
I have been thinking about you

Not a moment goes by when I don’t miss you

Walking along a busy road

Cars passing

Anonymous

human contact is what I long

Your contact

Sleepless nights
Restless spirit

Searching for peace and resolution

Practicing loving kindness

catching thoughts before they produce actions

that cannot be reversed

What happen to the spark

Where did it go

Did I really lose sight

Of what makes life worth living

The happiness

The hope

Digging

 I am looking for courage

Anything to let these thoughts go

As past pulls me back

I walk forward

I must find a way to go on.
