live art soul sesh

For many years now I have been doing live art. It is a passion of mine and a unique aspect to my artistic practice. Recently I was asked to do some live art in the small BC town called, Invermere. This is near where my elders live and a place I have a deep and intimate connection with. I didn’t think it was going to be particularly busy as kids were back in school. This is kind of nice as it meant I could just enjoy painting outside and not feel any pressure to perform. This can be the case if it is a paid gig or a festival where there is lots of people watching your every move. This was a very chill live art session in the East Koots, a picture perfect evening, not too cold, not too hot.

That is until this lovely family showed up, from Italy, who had moved here because they fell in love with the place. Who could blame them really, it is magical, healing, breath taking, to name a few. I could just stare into the sky here for hours and be completely satisfied. As things progress I am introduced to Emma, who was a ball of energy, a mini sun. I quickly realised she had an eye for the painting and before I knew I was taking art direction form her. She pointed to above the bear and said rainbow here. How can I argue with that, bam, rainbow. Then it was a flower here, a butterfly there and before we knew it it was time to call it a day. I stepped back, a little high off paint fumes and just marinated in the is-ness. Moments like this are precious. As they left there was a sheer sense of creative bliss, and a painting that speaks volumes, completely unpretentious, and warm like the sun. The following day I participated in an art and farmers market and wouldn’t you know the family stopped by for a visit. Emma presented me with an illustration, seen below. My heart warmed 1.5 degrees. Life is a funny thing, when nothing seems to make sense, it says Aloha, remember me? In which I say, ” Indeed I do, it’s been some time, thank you for uplifting a wounded spirit.”

The duality of life…I try to find some middle ground, head full of phenomenon, a heart with broken strings, a spirit that never quits, albeit changes like the moon, waxes and wanes.

not dead

I don’t know a lot, the mind wants to know everything, pressuring self to make changes, to fix, to doubt, to play tricks on the truth. I have been quiet lately, learning to listen, to witness, to see. Consciousness is a gift. Life is a gift. Look after your elders. Love them. No matter what. I forgive you. You know who you are. I don’t have a lot to say at the moment, someone will say it for me. I hope you are ok. I hope you have not given up on your dream. I wish you were here. I wish I was there. Wishful thinking. Love is not enough in this world any more. Love more. We created a hell of a mess. The youth will save this planet. It is not a matter of time. It’s a matter of life. If this makes no sense, well I am an artist, and really many things in life make no sense. Onwards.

I have been disconnected from writing blogs, instead I have been taking time to rekindle a spirit, helping out the elders, chasing eagles, breathing, for life is a precious thing.

Life on Earth

Gaia Theory was the impetus for the mural you see below. I was also inspired by ancient mythology received through literature, art, and through storytellers I have met while travelling. I chose this wall because it felt right. The business that occupied the store was a community hub of sorts, with many walks of life entering through it’s door.  The irony of the mural was that it was destroyed as a new building replaced the old. I thought this to be a symbol of how we treat Earth, as a disposable item created for our own pleasures, destroy and ‘don’t worry we’ll build a new one’ mentality. Have we become so completely self absorbed, unaware, and ignorant to the very thing that provides life? I know this to be untrue for myself and there are many folk on this planet who do give a damn, and bless their beautiful souls. And bless the souls who don’t care, they perhaps need it the most. We live together on this tiny planet hurtling through infinite space…perhaps we will meet up with a new life form that will show us an alternative way to live…or perhaps James Lovelock is right, AI and cyborgs will take over leaving us more or less pets in zoo.  On the up side we get to see what animals have known since humans decided to try to dominate Earth…maybe this the remedy we all need.

The Gaia theory was developed in the late 1960’s by Dr. James Lovelock, a British Scientist and inventor. I am not going to go into specifics here as I think if one is interested they do their own research and make their own conclusions.

Art of hälts…..

‘true self’ 💧this painting is about rising above the veil, high above your personhood, revealing the truth that sets you free 💙 I don’t know everything and that’s alright, I search for meaning in this life through painting, along the way I find some peace of mind, with a heart of gold, slightly tarnished, it’s alright, I am well on my way to the great reveal, God knows what this human does. (Painting: ‘mawyucan’ the whirlwind place mixed media on canvas soon to be painted over)

A recent watercolor in hybrid art format that again plays on the Gaia theory theme and ancient mythology.

I went for a paddle to see my eagle friend, watching them grow up into adults is such a treat! I can’t help but think we have a respect for one another, and when it gets windy and I fly on my windsurfer across the lake, its not uncommon for this big buddy to say hello, and. then fly off riding the breeze.

‘hälts went for a paddle’ 🌲 hälts SUP minimotion with eagle and a soundscape called ‘hello old friend’ 😐 warning this video may be a little disorientating, and really SUP’ping is a zigzag process, so its true to the experience, which is what a documentary is in my books.

Time

There is but a bitter sweet taste

that lingers on

cycling trivialities

to distract what’s real

corrupt love and friendship

leaving a path of senseless destruction

to the one who I loved

but could not love

I forgive you

yard art peace

Time may pass though heart makes no fuss, for love is a universal treasure trove of boundlessness.

Some words about self, and why it is essential to be in the present nowness.

Introvert extrovert. Joy when I am doing what I love. Sorrow when caught up in a past that I can’t adjust. I love the ocean, and the waves. I love to glide on water with the wind. I am at heart a caring and loving human. Challenged at times by a mind that plays ticks on me. Trying to force it away only aggravates things. I sometimes wonder whether it’s been worth the effort, so many things I have no control over. What is it I want to control, never mind, it’s a futile. I have made many things, I have lost just as many. Sometimes I like to retreat inwards, to find the the light, and clean the temple. I am not one who begs to be at the center of attention. I would rather just paint, plant gardens, and bake things. When I make art I am at my most vulnerable, open to energies, and sensitive to the environment. At the same time art is a place where I feel empowered and free, guided by inner spirit, although restless on occasion. I recently lost a best friend, one who I could in trust with pretty much anything. Now I find myself again in solitude, working on freeing myself from the shackles of my own mind. Slowly I make my way, a sprout in the garden, not knowing whats next, perhaps that’s the root cause of most suffering. Liberation grows from a soil made from years of convincing myself I am not good enough. As those ideas and stories decompose, they give the plants nourishment so they can grow. All will pass, life is indeed what you make it. I have no regrets, no things I would change; it’s been pretty freaking magical, many blessings and yes some hard lessons gained. Though the darkness isn’t far away, no mind, no mind. Send love to your sisters and brothers, even if it’s just a thought. Forgive thy enemies, forgive the friends. This perhaps is our greatest challenge, I know it is for me.

And now some minimotion yard art action…
‘yard art peace’ 🌤 new hälts minimotion with soundscape ‘goodbye hello’ and featuring a recent backyard art sesh transforming a self portrait into an abstract, this I found to be very satisfying.

Before I forget! I have launched my new website hältsart.com (click here to visit)  below is a kimono style garment with my painting SLO beautifully printed on it. This is chiffon fabric, nice and flowy, and see through. These garments are hand made in Montreal and well they are something to behold and very unique art wearables. I will be working on new designs throughout the summer, and running designs for short periods of time to keep them extra special. There’s been a lot of love put into each design and I look forward to sharing developments with you, Mahalo hälts ❤️

crystal palace

As the year 2018 draws to it’s conclusion, I go a little introspective in the solitude of the Koots. That’s the east Kootenays where the elders live, a paradise, everyday a gift to the eyes and the soul. It has been an interesting year on a personal level, a lot of lessons learned, and with that a little bit of wisdom gained. I made quite a few follies along the way, and also felt a certain loneliness that comes with being an artist, specifically a painter, to quote Joni Mitchell, ” I live in a box of paints”. I have spent countless hours working on my art, occasionally it swallows me whole. My good friend art has been a strong horse, the one constant in my life. I did manage to get out a few times over the year and visited some truly magical places. I worked with the youth, passing on my knowledge whole also receiving some kid sagely advice, kids know best in many areas. There were many people who helped make these moments possible. I hold each and everyone one of them close to my heart and I will cherish these moments for the rest of days.

Mexico Reverie

passing on the knowledge to Otis, and learning a few things in the process.

I was asked to paint a wave on this wall and needed up meeting a few of local kids, we had a blast, the mural is dedicated to John.

Oaxacan coffee break whilst working on my Zicatela mural in Puerto Escondido.

I bumped into some truly remarkable people, this fellow was no exception, I can only imagine what he has seen in his days.

Brand about to catch some waves, he had some serious style and it was an absolute pleasure to meet new extended surf family.

‘Oaxacan Spirit’ a hälts watercolour made on my trip in Mexico.

I try to dream this every night, such a magical moment, might turn into a painting…

This is my great friend and surfing legend Al with his hälts watercolour in the wall, my art is all over

This is foamie sitting outside waiting for the next set.

You could say this is a bird paradise.

my Zicatela spirit mural, I met some many amazing people while I worked on this beauty, art the bridge that never fails…well sometimes it does but it’s pretty rare.

I also managed to spend some quality time in the BC interior with family and with friends. British Columbia Canada is my second home, specifically Windermere BC. Windermere is where my parents live who are both well into their senior years, however doing quite well in my humble opinion. I also like to chase the eagles around and I am certain they find me quite amusing.
These moments are vital to my well being, engraved deep within my psyche, softening any edges accrued along the way. I am not saying I am edgy, however there has been a few times this past year that made me question a few things, feathers were ruffled, the enigma of humanity never short of surprises. I also realize I am part of that so this isn’t a criticism on humanity, we’re all in it, in our respective and some not so respective ways. I am optimistic for the next cycle around the sun, and no doubt there will some spectacular sunrises, and sunsets. I am also in the process of releasing a new website in 2019, it has been a slow process which is alright, do it right the first time as they say.

minimo double feature

‘peace and chill’ ⛩ hälts minimoiton with soundscape ‘day 12’ and wishing everyone a peaceful chill day today, even if for a brief moment in time, I am sending lots of love to my friends and family, near, far and wide.

I come to this place for many reasons, truth be told it would take a novel to explain. Perhaps than no explanation is required as a picture says a thousand words. December was a bit of a roller coaster ride, and my time in BC could not come at a better time. I have been painting steady and working diligently on my art every day with the exception of my film work forays. My last painting of the year turned out to be a bit of a disaster and sent my head spinning. Some time away from the studio has been a blessing and has give me a chance to recharge and get some perspective. With what looks to be a busy year ahead it is a good time to prepare and refresh the mental hard drive, and give the soul some love.
