self discovery

I have lived mostly a revolutionary life. There is a glamour to that on surface level that makes me seem interesting to some, and to have lived a ‘fast’ life. For me though it is as if I am standing on a beach, with the sea gently caressing its shoulder and in the distance there is a sailing yacht with the name, ‘wife, white picket fence, kids, and a home’ sailing away into a stunning sunset. This has been my choice, and with that comes a price, for the unknown is daunting and challenges even the deepest primordial instincts, not to mention societal pressure to conform. This is the reality of every person who walks the less travelled path, who willingly goes there to explore themselves in an effort perhaps to learn about oneself, and to experience on their own terms, life’s lessons, and with that the choice to adjust their settings accordingly. This is a life long practice, and takes patience, stamina, perseverance, determination, amongst so many things…. and one has to be motivated to do this on their own volition. The way to get to point a to b is not exactly ideal, there is multitude of things that can and will come up that will challenge ones constitution and disposition. Finding a way to reach a desired outcome that both respects my self interest as well as the other is imperative to a positive experience, having learned both ways I can see the utility in this. This is where I will be focusing on for while, following a period of perhaps self induced pain and suffering as a reaction to certain desires not being met, at least the way I wanted them to, this is in all probability the hardest thing to acknowledge, and there exists a myriad of ways to avoid this aspect of reality, and that’s coming from experience. Self awareness is a life skill that enables us, the ‘seeker’, to navigate unchartered waters, metaphorically speaking, and extends to our place in our community, including family and friends. This is what’s been in my mind of late in this period of solitude I find myself in. I think it’s more than likely I will continue to write about this in posts to come. This also might seem a little raw, it is, as I work out exactly what it is a I want to say. Until next here is some more of my art from recent and past. Enjoy and be well!

One of my desires as an artist is to go to the other side and bring back knowledge in order to help serve humankind.

playing with paper cut outs as I start a new watercolour, always honing my skills, pushing myself to go that extra distance🕯 underneath is a vision quest rock art I was fortunate enough to visit a couple years ago, spine tingling kind of stuff, always good to pay respects to where art has come from.

🌝 a new hälts minimotion, ‘eclipse of the illusion part 2’ with soundscape ‘early spring’ 🌿 featuring a new animation ‘jaguar eye’, a praying mantis that came to visit hälts during a paint sesh, and a few clips from @espressokino movie night, the Japanese have a way of getting under your skin and deep into the psyche, and a couple watercolur WIP seshs, enjoy and let the illusion go…what would life be if we could actually be free, who knows, so it goes.

hälts watercolour WIP ‘Phoenix rising’ and ‘the healer’ in the background.

and lastly a link to ‘the healer’ painting which is now available as a super Ltd. Ed. sigend and numbered print on my Etsy store, here’s the link Mahaloness Etsy shop link, click here

dream, bliss, ritual and dankness

A dream….

I was walking and discovered that I was lost, so I kept walking trying to remember where I am, who I am and what I am doing here. The void grew and slowly  the world around me that I took for granted disappeared and a blanket of darkness cloaked the light. As I moved forward the sounds of familiarity faded into silence, the smells I once loved were not there, and the air was tasteless. Soon I lost touch I seemed to be floating in no particular direction, I tried to remember what I looked like, nothing, I tried to remember the lovers I had once loved, nothing, I tried to remember my friends, nothing, family, nothing, there was only nothingness.

drala in BC

Although the sun is always in the sky, what is it that causes you to look up and see that it is there? Although magic is always available, what allows you to discover it? The basic definition of drala is “energy beyond aggression.” The only way to contact that energy is to experience a gentle state of being in yourself. -‘Shambhala. The Sacred Path of the Warrior’ by Chögyam Trungpa

For the past little while hälts has been soaking up some BC magica, taking in as much as is humanly possbile while giving back to his elders, building a safe and sturdy path so they may move easily and confortably. The artistic flow enters new territory, gaining a new appreciation of the work of stone masons. Similar to painting, the act of mark making takes on 3-D form, brick to brick, stone to stone,  one step closer to final composition. There is a sense of fulfillment and happiness in this work, it will be interesting to see how this influences hälts artistic practice as he continues along the artists path.

The artist path, literally.

The inspector checking the pathway workmanship on a hot and sunny day.

Working in the yard making a path and one cannot but help be entralled by the sacred geometry.

Breaks by the lake put life to persecptive as BC soaks into my soul, or isnit th either way around, gratitude all around.

As the moon crosses sky so too does deer cross the Earth, as above so below.

soul medicine

life offers joy

life brings pain

life brings surprises

and sometimes disdain

no matter what may come

there will be hälts

making art.

A bit of a painful moment in hälts life journey, these moments build character and are essential to feel, whether you be man, woman, or child, give yourself the freedom to let go and feel whatever it is you feel, than write it down, express it through art, or cooking, or dancing, or singing, maybe a little less drinking, whatever it is you do, channel it, this is good medicine.

No matter how alone you may feel, there will always come a visitor to remind you that this may not be true. (Praying Mantis friend visitation during a maui mana painting sesshin)

When the crow speaks you listen, spending time with Nature, observing Nature is good medicine.

Art is a facilatator of joy.

Aloha A’ina Sesshins

In 2012 I travelled to Maui to do some soul searching and connect with the land and sea. I spent much of the time sitting and drawing, channelling the energy of the island and letting my pen translate the feeling I that flowed though my being. Each place I visited grounded me by letting the environment introduce me to the A’ina, which is a Hawaiian word for ‘Earth, land’. Aloha A’ina means love for the land, love of the land. I have always felt that I am a child of the land and have exepreinced this feeling in many places around this precious Earth. The land, sea and air offer lessons to us that can be benefitial to our well being and bring persepctive to the challanges we face in this lifetime. When we shift our thoughts and let Nature mind in we open doors to healing, both for oursleves and the land we are part of.

The Tara painting part 4

This is part 4 of my ‘painting a tara’ timelapse series, featuring me in the studio working my magic on my latest Tibetan inspired White Tara painting. Following my university days I began to explore Eastern Philosophy and meditation. It has been a lifelong interest of mine. Many of the breathing practices I apply to my meditation also make their way into my painting sesshins, as I like to call them. Each brush stroke becomes a breath and that way I am putting my full energy into each mark I make, while allowing my body to feel loose and limber. Although this may not be the fastest way to make art, it does translate into beautiful healing paintings. Please enjoy part 4, simply go to the link. The music in the video is a recording of me playing my moms electric piano and further developed in Garageband. It also features my own sampled recordings and a few basic synth sounds just to give it a nice blanket effect. Enjoy.
