wordless

Now some words from hälts pictured above….

There is a metamorphosis going on, the acknowledgement of pain and suffering as part of the experience and acceptance of its weight. Strengthen spirit, forgiveness, honouring the work done in the passing cycle and arrival to new understanding. Rebirth of compassion while seeking the underlying truth, what lies underneath the veil and exposing the light within. Channeling inner rage and fierceness  into powerful works of art without hindrance, free from fear, expectation and result. Going deep, treating painting and art with the utmost respect and honouring the gift given.

crystal palace

As the year 2018 draws to it’s conclusion, I go a little introspective in the solitude of the Koots. That’s the east Kootenays where the elders live, a paradise, everyday a gift to the eyes and the soul. It has been an interesting year on a personal level, a lot of lessons learned, and with that a little bit of wisdom gained. I made quite a few follies along the way, and also felt a certain loneliness that comes with being an artist, specifically a painter, to quote Joni Mitchell, ” I live in a box of paints”. I have spent countless hours working on my art, occasionally it swallows me whole. My good friend art has been a strong horse, the one constant in my life. I did manage to get out a few times over the year and visited some truly magical places. I worked with the youth, passing on my knowledge whole also receiving some kid sagely advice, kids know best in many areas. There were many people who helped make these moments possible. I hold each and everyone one of them close to my heart and I will cherish these moments for the rest of days.

Mexico Reverie

passing on the knowledge to Otis, and learning a few things in the process.

I was asked to paint a wave on this wall and needed up meeting a few of local kids, we had a blast, the mural is dedicated to John.

I bumped into some truly remarkable people, this fellow was no exception, I can only imagine what he has seen in his days.

Brand about to catch some waves, he had some serious style and it was an absolute pleasure to meet new extended surf family.

I try to dream this every night, such a magical moment, might turn into a painting…

This is my great friend and surfing legend Al with his hälts watercolour in the wall, my art is all over

This is foamie sitting outside waiting for the next set.

You could say this is a bird paradise.

my Zicatela spirit mural, I met some many amazing people while I worked on this beauty, art the bridge that never fails…well sometimes it does but it’s pretty rare.

I also managed to spend some quality time in the BC interior with family and with friends. British Columbia Canada is my second home, specifically Windermere BC. Windermere is where my parents live who are both well into their senior years, however doing quite well in my humble opinion. I also like to chase the eagles around and I am certain they find me quite amusing.
These moments are vital to my well being, engraved deep within my psyche, softening any edges accrued along the way. I am not saying I am edgy, however there has been a few times this past year that made me question a few things, feathers were ruffled, the enigma of humanity never short of surprises. I also realize I am part of that so this isn’t a criticism on humanity, we’re all in it, in our respective and some not so respective ways. I am optimistic for the next cycle around the sun, and no doubt there will some spectacular sunrises, and sunsets. I am also in the process of releasing a new website in 2019, it has been a slow process which is alright, do it right the first time as they say.

I come to this place for many reasons, truth be told it would take a novel to explain. Perhaps than no explanation is required as a picture says a thousand words. December was a bit of a roller coaster ride, and my time in BC could not come at a better time. I have been painting steady and working diligently on my art every day with the exception of my film work forays. My last painting of the year turned out to be a bit of a disaster and sent my head spinning. Some time away from the studio has been a blessing and has give me a chance to recharge and get some perspective. With what looks to be a busy year ahead it is a good time to prepare and refresh the mental hard drive, and give the soul some love.

When in Mexcio

These are scenes of Mexico, moments in time that are fleeting yet make it so special. What that is exactly it is hard to put into a blog. It’s so many things, so many varieties, so many different people, cultures, languages, and vehicles. Unfortunately it does not capture the smells of Mexico, it does offer a glimpse into life there, what I experienced, and how that has made an impression on me. I met so many wonderful people, so many beautiful people, so many beautiful places, the sky, the ocean, the everything. This was no vacation, this was an experience, tasting the culture, putting myself out there and being open to new possibilities. I live a very solitary life as a painter and just in general. Coming here I was catapulted out of my studio, out of my comfort zone, and into a milieu of new people, and places never before seen and yet a strange familiarity once there. I never felt out of place, it welcomed me with open arms and let me into it’s magic. In response to my experience I shared my gift, which is my art, and did a few projects that were life changing and beautiful. Each day I woke up and wondered to myself, ‘what’s going to happen today?’. I was never disappointed.

Whatever you do, don’t take this life for granted.

Here are some images with captions, I am grateful for the experience I will share some of my insights in posts to come. For now please enjoy these memories shared. Thank you, Gracias, Merci, Mahalo and Aloha ❤️❤️❤️

collectivo a la Mexico a cost effective way to get around whilst being immersed with the people

place and people in flux

conversation, here people talk to one another on the streets, there is a real sense of community

street life, the man with the balloons, look into his eyes what do you see?

men and the sea (well ocean) people of the ocean, of the water, one cannot be without the other

up in the sky do buzzards glide omnipresent, keen observers of down below

the ocean’s caress

Waves can travel great distance before they reach these shores

the sun is big in this part of the earth

The last image here is of the storyteller, friend, coach, waterman, life guard, father, surfer, SUP brah, Shaka brah, and the generous one, to name a few. The man is John Silver who I had the great fortune to meet and who sadly recently passed away. It is to honour him so he is remembered for who he was, and not for his life ending. It is with a heavy heart I post this because I just was beginning to get know him and he had a major impact on me in the short time we spent together. I am sending his family my love and perhaps it can be said that through sorrow we come together as one, rest in peace John, thank you for this blissful moment.

history

This is a story of a man who was set free, and who is know on a voyage of self discovery and peace. Following years of trials and tribulations he never gave up, there were close calls, there were some deep troughs, he always pulled through. It is in his journey that he discovered there is a divine force that has been with him all along that has guided him through the darkness and illuminated him so he was able to find his way. This is a form of liberation because he realized that he had been carrying a heavy pack and the weight was not his to carry. He has forged ahead with renewed vigour and slowly his heart returns to a healthy state, his spirit reclaimed, under the watchful eyes of his spirit ancestors. When the world gets you down just remember that you too have this with you, omnipresent, always, so continue on, empty the weight that is not ours to carry, respect yourself, sing to yourself, dance, love, laugh, go to the inner temple and revere yourself. There is a light in all of us, there is a sparkle in every humans eye, there is potential to turn things around, and this is a powerful insight that I share with you.

a window

Q:What is silence?

A: A mind that is still.

fotoMahaloness and minimotions

I will admit my studio sometimes looks chaotic, I try to keep it neat and tidy, that lasts about a minute, once creative impulse kicks in there’s no such thing as neat and tidy. I have been working on this painting below for several months, I started it in a friends store, I worked near a window that in most days bathed me in sun light and was the best light I have ever worked with, expect sometimes it got a little too hot, which can make it difficult to work with acrylics, it gets sticky and can be tricky to move in the surface. While I painted friends would come hang out, and talk about life, school, and all sorts of interesting. I found the experience to be fun and also challenging, my comfort zone is a studio, being in public was a completely different experience to the cave art, cave art because I work in a basement, which is also my home, that has great light and I can see my garden through my studio window and the neighbourhood resident rabbit, Pedro. So eventually I did bring this painting back into the studio and have been working on it ever since, layer by layer, building, sculpting, weaving, and trying to see it through. I’ve been reading some Joseph Campbell recently, author of ‘Masks of the Gods’ and ‘Myths to Live By’ and I came by this passage which I think captures a little bit of what my painting called ‘SLO’ is about, of course I leave it open to your interpretation, and would not suggest that this is exactly my sentiments, however I also find it does resonate with me quite a bit.

One has to appear in some mask or other if one is to function socially at all; and even those who choose to reject such masks can only put on others, representing rejection, “Hell no!” or something of the sort. Many of the masks are playful, opportunistic, superficial; others, however, go deep, very deep, much deeper than we know…It is silly therefore to say, for example, “Let’s take off our masks and be natural!” And yet- there are masks and masks. There are masks of youth, the masks of age, the masks of various social roles, and the masks also that we project upon others spontaneously, which obscure them, and to which we then react.

Anyway I think it somewhat describes this painting, when I can think of something smart to say I will, I just have somewhat always felt this way about roles, and playig the parts in this theatre that is life.

a new minimotion called ‘the badlands’ with soundscape  ‘sometimes’ featuring footage from a recent work trip, I occasionally work in the film industry as a grip, this footage was taken while in the badlands of Alberta, a place where giants once thrived, and now film crews roam. This place is like turning the clock back except for the delapitated grain building, who was also once was a giant.

‘inside the studio’ a minimotion documenting the process while working on a very special project, a skeleton helmet airbrush WIP for a Canadian Winter Olympic hopeful with soundscape ‘waiting on clear coat’

peace obama(s)

Since 2008 I’ve been working on a series of paintings documenting the Obama years, which I coin as a ‘paintamentary’. The idea for the series titled, ‘are you a believer?’ was planted on a field trip to New York to visit an old friend, check out art, be a sponge, and let the city be the guide. The trip was overwhelming, being an open vessel every bit of free space was filled, including the Obama buzz, everyone was seemingly on board with this guy, young, old, black, white, and in between. Hope was the catch phrase of the day. Following the trip I was painting late at night listening the the radio, as I do, and all the buzz was Obama this, Obama that, it was everywhere, inescapable, yes even in Canada. So like any responsible artist I decided to document the buzz through my painting, and the paintamentary was born. As the years went by attitudes changed, like a baramoter of human consciousness, the series unfolded. Each painting tells a story of that spectrum of time. As I continued working I discovered I had developed a disdain for politicians, most likely  due to a steady diet of reading  the likes of Hunter S. Thompson and his coverage of the nasty underbelly of American politics. That said you don’t have to read HST to see that politics is steeped in corruption, and that big business runs the world, and their intentions is aimed at one thing, build the economy first, make themselves rich, and let us deal with environmental degradation later. No doubt we are an interesting species and thats what makes life interesting although complex, with so many nuances, opinions, and ideas floating around it can be hard to make any kind of coherent and well articulated approach to this quagmire. I do however intend to persevere, keep educating myself and make meaningful art and use my platforms well. I don’t see any Trump paintings in my future, however it does motivate me to make some positive art that channels source and furthers the work of my ancestors, art stewardship, that’s what’s up, persevere, make more art.

The journey continues with minimotions and pictures for point of reference, below you will see various stages of my paintamentary series and a brand new minimotion called ‘peace obama(s) featuring 8 years of ‘are you a believer?’ animated and accompanied to my newest soundscape ‘painter man’, enjoy! Any insights, questions, comments please send them my way would love to see them. Mahaloness over and out….oh wait! I will be opening a Mahaloness ETSY SHOP so exciting news there, I will be selling mostly prints, start off small, I will make an announcement when that’s good to go⚡️
