Guided Imagination

a form of imagination that goes beyond what we normally understand by the word: in the anthropologist Anna-Leena Siikala’s phrase, it consists in ‘setting aside the critical faculty and allowing emotions, fantasies and images to surface into awareness’.  -David Lewis-Williams ‘The Mind in the Cave’ p.134-35 c.2002 Thames & Hudson Ltd. London

Some of my murals are buried under layers of paint. This particular mural is intended to be a portal for achieving sensations and expereinces of the other world. It is also acts as a protective force feild that keeps trickster spirits away.

bee on the wall

I am a bee on the wall. (bee stencil art by hälts c.2014)

I am a man walking down the busy city street. (hälts street fotography Toronto c.2005)

I am the shadow in a quiet street. (shadow work, Paia town, Maui explorations c.2012)

I am the social experiment at a festival (Entheos 2011, art experiment no. 55 fotodocument)

I am the Chief on the bus.

(Bassbus c.2011, detail looking at Chief Big Hau, he is based on a Chief from the Siksika Nation (Cluny Alberta)  whom my grandfather befriended in the 1930’s)

I am one with it, yet also insignificant, a small speck surrounded by the infinite.

808 soultime

It is in silence that the soul speaks.

-Vera Stanley Alder

During the summer of 2012 a spirit called me to the 808 State. I was going through some tough times and I decided to go on an adeventure, get out of the bubble I had made myself and go do some serious soul searching in the middle of the Pacific. I felt it was time to reboot my hard drive and build some new memories, new ones to replace the old ones that had ran their course. The trip lasted much longer than anticipated, one month turned into three, Maui has a way of doing that. I was given a real crash course on island life and discovered that when one is travelling alone there is plenty of silence for the soul to speak.

This so happens to be my 808 th post, so here are a few gems from my island adventure, these aren’t your typical tourist shots of beautiful waterfalls or turquoise waves lapping ever so gently on a white sand beach, no my friends these are real shots of my full immersion into island life, behind the scenes, and in between. Where it all started, Mahaloness that is.

no. 2
Memories drift in my mind, time after time, resonating misery that besieged me for so long. Ho’oponopono.

no. 3
Raised by wolves the animal instinct comes alive when the night sky is filled with moonlight. My animal companion with me, a guide perhaps, non existent to the other, until you cross that line.

no. 4

Lost in haze, without uniform, searching sky, rainbows like oil slicks fill my eyes, what were once mountains carved down by man’s hand, a valley in the making, smoke stacks make for great picture making, while at night bright lights flashing high in the sky, no plane sound, what is it? Have I finally lost my mind.

no. 4
Awoke from a very long sleep and realized there, in my arms, lay a goddess next to me. How long had she been there I wondered? Was she with me all this time?

fotoMahaloness -a protective deity mural I installed in an ohana in Paia, Maui. Similar to a tv cable guy except this feeds your soul and replenishes your heart center, the Mahaloness way.
And in closing, medicine for the heart.20130810-003413.jpg

LRG scale

I took the leap a long time ago.

fotoMahaloness -right on the edge, the moment before the leap into the world of large scale painting (the first image is looking down off the swing stage quite often used for painting large murals on high rise walls.

a magical bus I painted a couple years ago, a labour of love. I do not receive a lot of recognition or acknowledgement for this project, it was a massive life lesson which took a while to accept, we have all been there.20130723-220216.jpg

in this image taken from the ‘net, everyone and their cat has their name on it except for the artist who painted the bus, me, this has been a pet peeve of mine, when artists do not receive acknowledgement and recognition for their work, unfortunately it happens far too often. The saving grace is that it is the style of the work that itself is my signature.20130723-220317.jpg

Maui project (2 murals one permanent in Paia and the other impermanent painted on a concrete shack in the middle of a field next to Ho’okipa, a very special place, the black mural was literally painted in pitch black at night on a new moon, it lasted 2 days before it was painted over by the Kony 2012 fake it until you make it campaign20130723-220423.jpg

This was the first mural I ever worked on, I worked with a group of guys from Toronto (Global Colors Inc.) spearheaded by Jamie Osborne, who along with Christiano, and Ramone, taught me the ropes on mural making and working at large scale.20130723-221356.jpg

my latest project, a section of a sea can I painted which took me 3 weeks to complete, full on, blood, sweat and tears, when you work large scale the workload also increases.20130723-223352.jpg

Rainy daze

Floating with clouds, as I drift into maui reverie, ripe mangoes right from the tree, records left behind, built into the matrix of this life, as tides ebb and flow, engraved memories come into mind, daydreaming on a rainy daze made sublime.
