a little reminiscing

A poem for the moment.
Hope you find what your searching for my darling

I hope you find these things

Because a new beginning is what you needed
fotoMahaloness

This is what it’s like to paint for me, I drift in and out, from the here now, to those moments when I was healing my soul from the grind and filling my artistic cup with the jam that keeps me going. I hope you like it, the soundscape is ’painter pilgrimage’ Enjoy! 📽  ‘painter man’ with soundscape ‘painter pilgrimage’

This is me in contemplation. I have been working on this WIP called ‘SLO’ for months and months, I am so close to finishing this painting. I have been working with a bit of a heavy heart, I will not complain it is a part of life that we love to sugar coat and throw inspirational quotes at, however the only way to get through things is to let it pass, the art of letting go, non attachment, impermanence. Sometimes I sit for hours with a brush in hand, it is natural to have thoughts during these moments, thoughts about life, art, people, lovers, family, friends, the ocean, you know thoughts. This has been my journey, a painter pilgrimage, I guess it’s my way of passing through life with a sense of dignity and grace, because one cannot know grace without also knowing folly. Although I have my days when I want to walk away from this practice, I wonder what life would be if I had never picked up a paint brush, it seems implausible, because it is. I will never forget the day I told my sister, ‘I am going to be an artist!’, and she replied, ‘you already are.’ So keep on my friends, find a way, and make art not war. (Artwork: the red bicycle by Raya Monroe, bought this painting form a young artist back in the day, it makes me smile, and my watercolour ‘the Shalu kid’)

And a few moments in time with my WIP ‘SLO’

I like to sit and paint next to Rothko.

flashback

A rather old digi painting I made, I love waves, I love the ocean, it brings me great joy of being, soon I will be out again in its frothiness, duck diving waves and with a little luck, getting shacked.

an offering

As I travel through this unfamiliar land I begin to release the pressures that life brings, and the soul does sing. I am guided by an inner desire to explore this planet, always observing its changes, some subtle, some more extreme. Here in the coast I smell the the salty ocean air, sun kissed, all that was a problem evaporates with the morning dew, only leaving a heightened sense and clearer view. New experiences, new perceptions, the ocean brings healing to being and calms the mind made busy in the pursuit of maya and the illusions that life presents. Here I am carefree, worry free, anxieties driven by the hustle and bustle lifestyle to maintain some kind of comfortable existence fades quickly replaced by soothing sounds of lapping waves on a beach, sparkling with millions upon millions of tiny beads, birds singing, and a cool sea breeze. Let me live in this moment forever even though I know this to be fleeting, I will keep this moment in my memory banks for those days when life turns blue.

When on the road there are people who will leave you something nice, reminding you that humanity despite the news is alive and well

morning yum made with love by my travelling companion

I am always fascinated with the local flora when I arrive in a new place.

I love to timelapse the sky, here is the sky near Seaside Oregon, close to where the Columbia River meets the  Pacific Ocean.
It is time to move on to see some giants, ancient trees, remanants of what was, and a reminder to continue to protect these areas, stewardship, so that future generations can experience these amazing trees in person, not just on a computer or smart phone screen.

And now from the hälts ART vault

Here are three treasures from the vault, they show my early forrays and amalgamation of abstract, realism and surrealism. I had a lot of urban influence early on, as well I was interested in Japanese kabuki, mokuhanga (wood block printing), specifically ukiyo-e artistic genre. I have continued to work on this style as you will see in the last image which is a recent foto from my studio.

traveling artist (part 2)

Q: What is the purpose of your trip?

A: To spend time observing the ocean, stand with a few of the remaining old growth forests, and with a little bit of luck decompress.

As I wonder along an elusive path hidden by tall grasses I trust my instincts and find my way to an opening. In front of me a sandy beach flanked by sculpted sand dunes, and a lonely sea gull gliding effortlessly with the cold Pacific breeze. This morning is calm, puffy white clouds drift by, and tide is low heading towards high. The saltiness of the air is refreshing to the senses, as the land and the sea remind me just how magnificent this planet is.

fotoMahaloness and a minimotion

‘gone to sea’ a new hälts minimotion with soundscape ‘taking time’ featuring footage captured by me while in Nahalem, Oregon, while on road trip up the coastline towards Canada, which is North, eh.

I could spend a century wondering these beaches with relative stationary sand dunes, staring out to sea, and bringing it back in to observe the tiny elements that make up this fascinating ecosystem. The one thing I have always noticed about the Oregon coast is the cooler temperatures especially when there is a sea breeze, thankfully there are many natural and human aided structures to take some shelter and a poncho can go a long ways.

jelly fish washed up onda beach, how far did it travel to get here?

the tent in all its glory

‘painted rock’ found at a tire place we went to due to some strange sounds coming from the wheel, I took this as a good sign

‘tides change’ a water colour digital hybrid that I painted while exploring Nahalem, beach styles

And now for a new feature on Mahaloness, a look back at my work from the hälts art archives….

Over the years I have been very fortunate to work on commission work. This is a very rewarding part of my art because one it pays the bills, and also I have a chance to work so many great people who we artists call ‘patrons’. Without patrons artist would not thrive, both now and historically speaking. It is through these commission paintings that I have been able to hone in on my skills and push my comfort zones with respect to the subject matter. For the most part I have gotten most of my work through word of mouth, and some commissions through social media. This did not happen overnight, even though there were times I wish it did. Usually my commission work starts with a meeting, where I sit down with my clients and we discuss what it is they want and I try to offer my expertise and knowledge based on my experience. I do tend to work intuitively so learning how to communicate this to clients has taken some time, in terms of earning there trust, while also in keeping  with their vision. Through the process I tend to share updates and occasionally will have studio visits, which are really quite fun and satisfying, especially when the client is stoked with what they see, this makes the work less stressful and the patron feels like they are part of the process. What I would like to do in future posts is write about some of these commissions specifically as they do have stories that go above and beyond the paintings themselves. Lastly, I will be starting a new chapter with Mahaloness and interviewing people from various walks of life, especially areas that I am particularly interested in as an artist, so more on that in future posts, for now enjoy the commissions and may Mahaloness be with you.

Here are a few commissions from the hälts archives.

Sometimes we confuse the moon with the finger pointing at it – Eastern wisdom

Life is a journey. There are some thinkers who believe they can break it down into a simple model, we travel from point a to b, in an effort to continue moving forward from what can be perceived as an unbearable present and a desirable future. This is rather simplistic notion, as there is also the possibility of a spiritual path, one who walks the middle path, aware that there is a mind and whose chatter can lead us to do things seemingly unconsciously, making choices for us all the while missing the magic of the moment. This isn’t some hippie jippie, yes I made that word up, this is the truth that life is beyond the package, magic exists, omnipresent, whether we choose to see it or not. The thing is, it cannot be explained in words, period. Yes there is power of thought, it is an integral part of being human, so is the magic, and has been part of us tens of thousands of years that we know about, probably more, what’s a number, it’s ancient, we can try to think our way out of things, isn’t it funny when things do work out, we are elated and forget that we were in an unbearable moment thinking the worst, this is unexplainable, neuropsychology, neuroscience, …, all try to explain through experiments, statistics, pictures and graphs, that persuade us the viewer to believe whatever they want us to believe, yes that’s it….wait, why? Life is hard! Yes it is if you follow the conditioned thought patterns, when you open up to other possibilities, the universe opens up, doesn’t mean it does it for you, you have have to put in the work, so it goes. Have a great day🌞
