delicate thread

A singer goes through  life and sings about it, a painter paints a painting.

I wanted to take a moment to write a little about who I am, and what Art means to me. When I was younger I did not dream of being an artist. I dreamed of dragons, flying and the occasional nightmare, most likely related too much sugar. I do recall that throughout my life I have always wanted to draw, which I still practice to this day. The first drawings I remember the best were in junior high. I would draw sneakers, in all kinds of designs and was interested in creating new designs, and styles. I drew on whatever surface I had available and generally speaking I got in a lot of trouble for ‘doodling’ when I was supposed to be listening and paying attention to the class. The funny thing about that is I was listening, perhaps even better than I had not been drawing. Drawing has always given me that, a refuge if you will. As I grew up sports took over my life, I was training  9 times a week in competitive swimming and played hockey a few days a week. It was a lot. I don’t regret playing sports it all contributes to who I am today and I do like to play once and while however it is not the same. After high school I went on to work in the bar industry and was my first introduction to the art scene in my hometown. I just remember all these really interesting ‘cool people’ and going to the weirdest art/live shows, that included visual art, music and dance. It was another world. I had grown up mostly in a rural  setting, this was all new to me and I dove in completely open to it all. This opened the door to all sorts of experience, some really incredible opportunities and some not so good real life situations that would impact my life deeply. Perhaps it was some of these events that led me back to art, it is really hard to say, and perhaps that will become more evident to me as I grow older. I think in some was I am still close to some of these things and this can make it difficult to write about. Over the years I have worked with a bunch of different media. This includes photography, video/editing, computer/digital art, drawing, animation, sculpture, music and painting. None of which I had any really former training in, and this has been my journey ever since. For the last several years I have been slowly bringing all these forces together, and with advances in technology I have been fortunate to create things I would of never dreamt of, even as a child. It has given me the tools to let my imagination run, and also allowed for me to work intuitively. As tools get easier to worth with, increased creative potential is what I see. As you may or may not know I also work in the film industry which is both creative and technical, this has benefited my practice in many ways, and gives me balance as I walk along the delicate thread of life and art.

retrospect

This is selection of drawings made on a trip to New York in 2006. I was going through some of my old books, reading the words I had written back then, and I realized I have not changed that much, with the exception of the reality of getting older, a few more grey hairs, and some lines on the face, these are also records I guess but the same spirit resides in me that goes back to my youth, and follows the string of my ancestry, perhaps back to a place when even time did not exist.

for my love

On occasion when I start to amass a bunch of work I put them all in one room and sing to them, this I find creates some unity. It also honours the work, the process and the fruits of thy labour. (foto: a selection of my new works, not quite all of them but you get the idea)

moose sign

I went to the mountains recently for some film work, my other passion, and found myself amidst the wild ones. In this case a juvenile moose presumably wondering what we were doing in his home. I try to imagine this animal watching us, observing the director and the DOP, wondering why the AD is always calling action and cut, and why these humans are moving around lights and bounces. The mountain air is always fresh unless of course there is forest fires, thankfully this time of year most of the fires have gone out. I am fortunate to work in this space fairly regularly either on a mountain top or in its valleys. I have come to realize the importance of stepping outside the studio so as to get some fresh perspective. Whether it is for work or pleasure being in the mountains raises my stoke and gives me strength. I also learn to appreciate life more, and not take any of it for granted, it is truly a gift to be here. Slowly and patiently, I am getting my magnificence back, each breath, each step, that much closer. There is beauty everywhere, you just have to look for it, and when you find it a lightness and a sense of belonging prevails.

Presently, I am back in the studio and thinking of an animal painting to make. I am torn between a bear and a moose, and I have tiger on the mind, funny enough. Perhaps all three in one… at any rate running into a moose was a good sign. So now please enjoy my images and minimotion, sharing some of the magic of the good ol Rocky Mountains.

faded past

an old public art space I worked in, I made the mural first it’s called ‘creator’ and the painting on the lower left was a live art piece called ‘the helaer’ which I worked on over a few months, it was a great room, lovely people and the experience remains a deep part of my being.

Spirit of the Universe

The spirit of the universe responds to action -wrote this in my notebook sorry I don’t have a source nonetheless truer words have never been written.

It has been full on lately in the studio working on various recycled cardboard WIPs and keeping the dream alive. I live in a place where art is one of those things treated as a luxury item so making art that is meant to elate and spark thought, feeling and promite healing seems like an endless uphill climb! This is why it is important to keep focus on the work and to not let these doubts and thoughts threaten the mission. I decided many years ago to develop my art and with the intention of doing it for the rest of my life, and this has not changed to this day. Sure I have had my fair share of setbacks and sometimes the valleys have been deep. I have managed to always find the jewel of wisdom in each and every one of my experiences, even if it takes longer than I would like, this has been vital in keeping my art positive, and sticking to my intentions of bringing wellness, good vibes and peace into this world.

minimotion

‘Frida’ hälts hybrid art

recycled cardboard WIPs are coming along nicely! Yew!

a messy studio is a good studio

I make all my own stencils from drawing to cutting out the stencils by hand, this gives them my uniqueness and style that would otherwise be lost if I just copied a photograph, that is why I get paid the big bucks! (reference here to Dace Chappelle, who apparently doesn’t like bloggers lol)

💛❤️💚 and lastly an exciting development is this helmet which I painted for Canadian Olympic skeleton athlete hopeful Mirela Rahneva, my helmet art will be featured in publications across Canada and on CBC, I am very honoured and stoked to be a part of this wonderful story, more on that as things develop!
