Green Tara

First a poem…

Let it go
No longer will I hold
Those thoughts of old
For they do not serve me
Don’t you see?
The suffering felt by all must cease
May you and I find liberty.
-annonymous

As I continue to work on the Green Tara working meditations have been fruitful. Bruce asked today, ‘how do you know when its done?’ I just know. I look at this painting in particular and it is clear to me that my process is more in line with sculpture than painting, and in this case I am building my layers up. I use various shapes and if you think of a topographical map that is how I usually deal with dimension. All I mean by this is I look at an image with a birds eye view and think about the surface as an undulating experience, this is how I see the canvas. Sometimes I go from light to dark and back to light with my layers, I build colors by layering transparent paint, it is a layering technique I have developed over time, lots of miles. I play with various techniques as you can see, and with all the wonderful pigments and various brushes available on the open market, the sky really has no limits. I specifically roll with Golden fluids, they make very nice paint indeed. Mahalonessfoto
The Green Tara, a modern version, Mother of Liberation, Buddha of Liberation, a reminder to keep a playful mind, not to take things too seriously, working for the welfare of beings in the female form, this version current to the times, and in my opinion, poignant. I have been influenced by Tibetan and Nepalese Tangkas in the last few years, I met master Tangka painter Romio Shrestha a few years ago at a Visionary conference in Hawaii, and had a up close and personal experience with his work romio’s website. I also recommend you check out your local library and look for books on Tibetan art, as an example ‘Wisdom and Compassion: the Sacred Art of Tibet’ Authors: Marilyn M. Rhie and Robert A.F. Thurman.
