in the current

The sun is shining and hälts finds himself in the current of artistic process. The harvest time has been fruitful as hälts has been painting live at Calgary New Age Books and Crystals. It has been a real pleasure to share the creative process with friends and strangers alike providing hälts with new perspectives, as viewers share their thoughts and provide new insights into the subject of art, and this wonderful life. The joy of painting is as much about the journey as it is the destination, inspiration is a two way street, this is Mahaloness way.

In this lifetime hälts has made many marks, and in this lifetime he will make many more, he make them count, make them resonate, make them sing, make them gentle, make them vibrant, make them communicate the heart, mind and spirit and what it is to be human, freedom .

Franz Klined

When I started painting seriously I was really into the New York School and the Abstract Expressionist scene from the 50’s and 60’s. I really enjoyed researching the likes of Gorky, Hoffman, Franz Kline, Kandinsky, Rothko, Pollack, Barnett Newman, de Kooning and so on. I do consider myself to be connected to a similar flow that many of these artists were tapping into and in a many ways they endured a lot of suffering as they pioneered the way to new methods of communicating the human spirit in all it’s richness. I owe these artists and others similar to them for their courageous work.

Studios

If there is one thing I have had no shortage of it would be studio space. Every one has it’s own feel and atmosphere, sometimes wide open, sometimes closed in. I spent nearly 3 months of my life in an old run down, yet still operational warehouse/industrial space in the middle of the prairie, during a rather frigid Canadian winter painting a cosmic space bus. I spent 3 months on Maui, and eventually made a bunch of things there that were completely infused with the energy and rhythms of that place. One of the advantages of being anonymous, so to speak, is I can go to cool places and do my thing and hardly anyone notices until that is I get discovered and than I simply move on. I have spent most of my life living under the radar and in some ways the advantages if that outweigh the pressure of conforming to a certain style or technique, or pleasing the gallery I am with, or keeping the collectors happy, that is superfluous to making art. Every space/environment I make art in opens my mind to so many interesting and beautiful possibilities, and this can be a blessing when the fear is kept at bay. Werner Fassbinder made a film about, ‘Fear eats the Soul’, does it not?

Looking

When she looks up into a starry night, she dreams of somewhere else. Maybe when she looks up at space, she is in actuality looking deep into her own subconscious, the part that we know so little about, the infinite darkness studded with shimmering stars, planets, galaxies and wurly nebulas.
FotoMahaloness features ‘Cosmic Girl’, a painting I made with a female subject who lives in her own world, the cosmos of her imagination, perhaps a dreamer, perhaps a freedom seeker, who happens to live in a so called real word, the one we all seem to know so well…
