hälts mini retrospective

I do look look (echo) back sometimes, not with regret but in awe of the life I have had the great fortune to live.

The whirlwind continues, working diligently as ever on my art life. I had a dream, a van dream, to drive all over and do art shows, murals and maybe even sell my apple butter, and pies with hot coffee. I decided to test out my dream by renting a van, packing it full of art, some apple butter, and the basic necessities for simple van life living. My destination,  Soulfood, located in the heart of Cranbrook BC. I have found that my best shows just kind of happen themselves, a room speaks, a wall calls, my intuition gives me a heads up. When I listen, good things usually follow, however one can never expect this will be the case, for expectation can fuzzy the intuition. The trip went really well, lots of mini adventures, and stopping to smell the fall. This is not to say there weren’t a few glitches, there always is, that’s called learning. However the unfathomable did occur, I forgot the device to make the coffee. I had a few moments of fear, such as being woken up at 2 am by outside flashlights and tapping noises on the window. I was able to reign in the fear and opened the door in a very quick move, jumping out and putting the red flashlight to my face. It was an effective move as the party of young folk screamed and then ran into the forest, never to be seen by me again. There was a chance of things backfiring, but wouldn’t you know the universe responded well. Afetrall this story is no CNN report portraying the calamity of modern civilisation, nor is this fake news. My trip was filled with positive experiences, meeting new people along the way,  and sharing in the joy of living, and installing an art show. It dawned on me while hanging my art that this was essentially a mini retrospective of sorts. Each painting a chapter in the story. As tired as I was installing and working on labels, and all that tuff that is part of the process, I was quite happy to be present and sharing my life’s work. To be frank, there were a few things weighing on my mind. A soar tooth, the angst of living in a city that doesn’t support the arts, and caring for parents who are in the last years of their story. I was also a little frustrated that I could not get a few more paintings. I was also hanging a painting that I had hidden for a couple years. It was a very personal piece, however I also know that it had a greater message than my own. Everything fell into place and exceptional hospitality made for a very stress free and enjoyable installation. I found being on the road gave name some clarity. Sometimes life is just one big blur, in these moments time slows right down, and humans connect live and direct, no need for interfaces and smart phones. This is something I cherish, and is why this will not be the last. The road back was effortless, albeit a bit tiring. Thankfully there are these places called rest area, I highly recommend taking them in, there’s some real gems out there. It is important to note, I am reminded that life is beautiful, mostly… you just need to tune out and tune in, if you know what I mean. So for now here is some pictures that express ten thousand words, adios!

moonlit night

Before my bed there is the moonlight.

It lies there on the ground, looking like frost.

Lifting my head, I gaze at themoon bright;

Lowering my head, in homesickness, I am lost.v

-Li Bai

and now a hälts minimotion with respect to the ritual…

Now a new minimotion called ‘homesickness on a moonlit night’ referencing Li Bai’s poem at the beginning of this post.

⛩ hälts minimotion featuring a day helping to install the Imagine Asian Exhibit at CSpace 4th Floor (old King Edward School) located in Marda Loop Calgary, which runs May 27th until June 3rd 10 am until 6 pm and features a diverse selection of artists and celebrating Asian Heritage Month. I am honoured to contribute a few pieces to the show and what a delight to witness a master calligrapher Simon Y. S. Wong at work on a poem that I narrate in the minimotion, soulful and magical at the same time

memory

I have been a little MIA lately, I suppose I have lots going on in my life. And really…..who doesn’t. So now that we’ve got that out of the way, lets get on with it. The last couple months have flown by. Ups, downs, sideways, upside down, around, twisted, sadness, happiness, and loneliness. Love came, love went, that empty feeling, don’t back down, ride the ebbs and flows that life brings. Those things that build character, and things that make me mad. A longing for something I have not found, I guess I’ll keep my nose the ground. The search continues, new dreams mapped out. Gone are some happy days that made sense at the time. Some came, some went, some never to be heard from again. Thoughts inwards, inner spirit, the quest for the truth. Moments of madness and chaos, and swarms of blue. Flowers so delicate and yet so distant as winter squeezes alllife from their memory. Wandering the city streets with no one in particular to meet. A fresh hot cup of coffee to warm the veins giving credence to the old adage,

Even bad coffee is better than no coffee at all.

-David Lynch

And now some halts art history…

‘creator’ a community spirit mural produced by halts and painted in 2016.

In 2004, I made a small series of paintings. It is the point in my life I decided to paint, or perhaps you could day painting serendipitously came into my life. I remember the first moment I touched a brush, I knew this is what I wanted to do, and never I never looked back.

Doing the dance, trance artist dance that is, which puts me into an altered state, no different than my ancestor artists  50 000 years ago making their marks in a cave, or a Bushman in South Africa 200 years ago dancing around a fire for hours and hours to the point of utter exhaustion, tapping into the same source. foto: Walt Flemming, champion effort my friend

The only thing that holds us back is fear, fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of the night, fear of letting the self be itself. This is possible to overcome by trusting oneself while doing it, being it, and seeing it through.

Creator

Began a new project just recently, a mural installation called “Creator’ based on a vision that sparked my imagination. The process is a lot of work, a lot of hustle and bustle, late nights, mixing paints, drawing, cleaning, running, music, drink water, look, step back, never look back, eat, drink, spray, brush, clean, sleep when the legs turn to jello…just one more session, okay and maybe another. This is the thing that makes me happy, I put a lot of care an attention into my murals, some take 3 months to do, some a day or two, it just all depends on mood, constitution, atmosphere, nerve, intuition, flow, and juice. When these elements are aligned it is magic in its purest form, and so far this project is all of the above. It is dedicated to a friend named Scotty who moved onto the next life and whose words of encouragement helped me to carry on, Eddie and Clyde Aikau (so inspiring), all other surfers and ocean lovers, and to people of Earth, as we all are here because Creator, who ever that is to you, made this existence and this planet, and the Cosmos and what a tremendous gift it is to be able to be a part of it all. Many thanks to New Age Calgary, Rebecca, Nicole, my family, Yvan, John, Guy, Mark, Leigh (who lent a projector, very cool and fun), Sunnyside Art Supply, the Roasterie, Sunnyside Market and all the folks who have contributed in one way or another, couldn’t do it without your help, love, food, coffee, smile, hug, laugh, thumbs up, and positivity. More coming soon my friends, if there is any questions or comments please let me know and I will do my best to get back to you. Until than I have a few more sessions on this beauty, and I am excited to say that I am making a movie which I will hopefully be completed sometime in March, I will post more on that soon. I leave you with some pictures and a few more words.

so many things

So many things:

to write

to say

to give

to share

to do…

breathe

do what you can and be okay with that, than do some more.

And now a quote by Alejandro Jodorosky (if you are unfamiliar look him up, I recommend watching his film, ‘El Topo’ but than again it is your adventure),

‘Once the arrow is launched, one cannot make it return to the bow.’

fotoMahaloness

The experience is impermanent, the journey continues, the soldier marches forth, the artist makes another mark, the barber shapes another dome, the dog barks for another bone. The journey continues, the beat is followed by one more beat, than another, than another. The man who has a stroke, a seizure, a heart attack, an aneurysm, a man who loses his wife to cancer and the man who is diagnosed with brain cancer continues to get up and take on the world, even if it is weird. The struggle is real, the struggle is an illusion, the struggle is a struggle when it is real. The journey continues, the parents get old in front of your eyes, the sisters, the brothers, the ones you love get older and some of them get sick or may fall and break a bone, life is real, even though it is an illusion, so many questions, so many answers, binary opposition keeps the machine running fine. Eat meat, eat veggies, eat shit, eat whatever it takes to keep you alive, even though it is possible what you eat can help you not live so long. The irony of life is death, and beyond death we just don’t know until that time comes when you find yourself knocking at Heavens door.

And now fotos of work and moments in time of this artist leading up to a new art show called “<3” in Calgary on display at Essentia Mattress store, located 1113 Kensington Rd N.W. and runs all of February with an artist opening on the 14th of February, 2016 between 2-4 pm. All  are welcome, so come on down and celebrate this wonderful thing we call art, free naps available as it is a mattress shop, and they happen to sell really nice organic mattresses that take sleeping and dreaming to a whole other level.
