hälts went Raw

Wow!! That was a busy few weeks, a bee hive of activity and long nights of making marks and finishing work! All this in preparation for ENVISION, put on by Raw Artists, which was held last week in Calgary. It was a successful night of celebrating the arts with a wide array of disciplines showcasing their stuff. There was so much energy in the room! I got right into it with some live painting and brought a nice selection of my art including my cherished painting ‘the Healer’, which did garner a lot of attention. There is no better feeling than to see people connect with my art. It makes all the hard work worth it, and trust me there is a lot of details in my art and it is best to see in person, in order to get the full experience. I think it’s important to point out that my intention is to make art that continually surprises you, and the details are meant to be revealed to the viewer over time. You will not get the same effect viewing my art on a computer screen.

At ENVISION, I also displayed a series of paintings on recycled cardboard, which were fun pieces for me to make, they are more in my street style, using techniques I would typically use for my murals. The cardboard series features artists who inspired me early on in my career such as Jackson Pollock and Frida Kahlo. I do have plans to continue the series and will branch out to writers, thinkers, and so on, all in due time. I also brought an assortment of  Ltd. Ed. wood prints, Fine Art Prints, and art cards, which feature a range of my paintings and hybrid art. Over the next month I will be sharing some of those with you and fill you in on how to get your hands on these rare treasures. I do very small batches and this keeps them extra special. I will be releasing a series of Ltd Ed. Prints of some of my newer work and will announce that in upcoming posts as well.

Preview of my art cards perfect for sending a letter to the beloveds

Finally, my art brings vitality and spirit into any room. My paintings and prints alike are enjoyed and appreciated by many folks out there, which is why I put so much love and attention into each one. For now enjoy some images of work, some shots from ENVISION and beginning with a recent minimotion.

‘This video encapsulates everything right about now (made to bring cheer back into the dialogue) ‘ 🎩 new minimotion I pulled out of my hat with soundscape ‘said’ featuring my airbrush skeleton sport helmet made for Canadian winter Olympic athlete Mirela Rahneva, which I was recently interviewed by the Canada Press for, also…driving down a road near my other home in BC, east koots brah, and a couple paint sesshins working on my ‘Keith’ recycled cardboard WIP, and a skate animation I made of the dude, and lastly my cards, mini trading cards and cards for writing letters to the beloveds, I will share in future posts how you can get your very own set of Ltd. Ed. cards 💛❤️💚

🖌     I have come a long way since the day I decided to make art my life. I have gone about it in my own way and have been able to develop my own voice amongst a world of influence, pressure, conditioning, a rather difficult and unregulated art market, the low probability of making it as a career, the outside influences and factors that an artist has little to no control of, and so on…. all these things have to be put to the back of the mind if one wants to make art that is meaningful and enduring, so to this I say, stand up tall!’ and the good news is, I am here to stay and make art until I am unable, hopefully that never happens. live art sesshin on recycled cardboard, doing what I can to use less new materials and add new life to something otherwise treated like a throw away item, my sister jumped in at the opportunity and made some marks of her own, I have made it a practice to pass my paint brush to people and let them go to town.

‘expressing spirit’ 🖌 I think my art is my spirit, the expression of spirit, and those who I connect with through my art are kindred spirit, and this is a really cool thing about art. reef and friends

Wow, it was a busy summer! This post is a bit of a recap and sharing some fun projects I have been working on. It is has been so busy in fact that I have had barely anytime to sit down, let alone write and post here on Mahaloness. With this in mind I am amped to get back to some writing, sharing stories and keep you up to speed on my latest art explorations and life experience. The set of images and minimotion I have chosen reflect a summer of liver art, camping and watercolour, flying on water (windsurfing), and a commission I have been working diligently on and am very stoked to share that with you in coming posts. There has been a lot going on in my life, and this seems to be the case with a lot of people I talk to. It is an important time for humanity to step up and start to work together and help each other out. It is a time to prepare for winter and plan some new projects and finish a bunch of paintings I’ve been working away at, and who knows maybe even plan a show sometime soon, be used art is best shared. So for now enjoy and I look forward to catching up and with a bit of luck a moment of peace.

Relatively new minimotion called ‘reef’ with soundscape ‘flying high’ featuring a windsurf sesh I had in late summer, shot by Gord and celebrating the van life, vw bus, toaster, and the wind!

There is a word in Sanskrit ‘srishtih’ which is a concept of creation and translates as “what is poured forth” and according to Joseph Campbell, ” anyone understanding this becomes, truly, himself a creator in this creation.” (Joseph Campbell. Myths To Live By. 1972)

My studio and humble abode featuring my painting WIP ‘SLO’

My good friend Gords VW bus which has carried us to some pretty amazing places, here we set up and camp fro the night in Yahk, BC, and I had chance to bust out some watercolor and get a nice little sesh in, road trip art.

pop up studio at my parents place in Windermere, when I travel I always bring my work, in one form or another, here is a live art painting WIP called ‘forest wolf’ which I have been working on at multiple public settings including Black Star studio in Invermere BC, wonderful people, artists, and my work is available at their studio, so if your in that neck of the woods go check that out💚

Here I am having a moment to enjoy the painting with this little buddhy at the Marda gras street festival doing my thing, live art is rewarding and fun, if your an artist and wanting get ‘out there’ with your work I highly recommend you do this once and while, it gives people a lot of joy and opens a window for complete strangers to have a conversation thus connecting people, and seems to be one way to restore humanity.

This is a skeleton helmet, the sport that is, the one where athletes slide face first down bobsled tracks, it is quite something to behold, here is a helmet I have been working on, giving it some spirit for a Olympic hopeful, it has been a super challenging project, pushing my limits and skills to the max, this was the early stages of sanding and idea generation, I am pretty amped to share the stages with you in future posts👊

Lastly it was a very fiery smokey summer for most of BC, it is amazing how fast things can change, and the implications will revel themselves for decades to come, the ever changing landscape of our planet, something that continues to light up my curiosity and is something I will share my thoughts on in future posts.

Thank you, Mahalo and Aloha
