feeding the soul

Art is here to nourish the soul and gives us things to consider as we navigate this life together.

It has been true to hälts that to be an artist means you are always on and, there is always  work to be done.  The practice is ceaseless and the behind the scenes work  is no slouch. It is a part of the modern day artist and the ever ending ‘get your work out there!’ This  includes  promotion, finding commissions, cataloging and formatting the work, social media, doing live art, all of which takes time. This does not mean that hälts chains himself to the easel, it’s a good idea to put down the brush, leave the studio and go get some life experience, take time to do be with family, and visit the local wildlife. This feeds the soul of an artist and are key ingredients in hälts art process recipe.  Art might come from within, however it is the external that informs and offers ideas and fuels the human spirit which all goes back into the work. As much as hälts puts attention and care into the aesthetic of his work, there is a message in his paintings, drawings and minimotions. The message is this, we live in this world, we being humans, we also live amongst other living beings and all of us live together in various environments that we all rely upon, and when in a healthy state, thrive on. In hälts eyes we owe it to ourselves and to each other and all the living creatures on this living and breathing planet, to take care of it, treat it well, and do things that will ensure it lasts for future generations, otherwise we are heading down a perilous road and all this beauty and wonder will simply vanish before our eyes. Now some scenes form a recent sojourn to visit the elders, and spend some quality time with the natiral surroundings, flora, fauna, clouds, Sky, water, Eagles, hummingbirds, chipmunks, flowers, well, all of it.

hälts took his Fineline fish out for a paddle, hopefully the eagle doesn’t pick it up in its talons, they are massive birds of prey, just an honour to spend time with them in this magical place

‘two worlds’ either we protect these sites or we watch them vanish before our eyes

seasons change

In this part of the world the seasons change. As winter loosens its grip, the snow melts and the landscape turns from white to brown. You can almost hear the trees getting excited as they awake from their dormancy, and birds also seem to be quite  psyched.

all fotos from recent sojourns to BC where hälts spends a lot of quality time enriching his senses and being one with the planet and all its wonder, there will future posts coming in an effort to share some of the journey with you all.

the dream

INT.COFFEE SHOP. DAYTIME

A human is sitting in a coffee shop, there is 2 older ladies speaking softly in French and and the ambient sound of coffee roasting, and friendly chatter fill the air. The man takes a sip of a fresh cup of coffee, he reflects following a sojourn to the mountains, reminding him of his wild side, the animal within. The coffee shop melts to the ground revealing an expansive forest and mountains with a fresh dusting of snow, fall is in the air.

While hälts spends most of his time working on his art, he also has reconnected lately with his wild side, tapping into the Natural element, being one with it, breathing the fresh mountain air, walking where the bears walk, where the wolf pack hunts, and the moose roam. This is a place where he can give his inner human the best treatment that no salon, no spa could ever dream of. That’s not to say that these are not ways to relax and balance, it’s just that for the second half of his life he has been adapted to city life, each day his connection to Nature disrupted by airwaves, sirens and the bottom line. As the city edge wares off the inner human comes to the surface, smelling the air, feeling the earth beneath his feet, awareness wakes, these moments so few and far between. (from a recent hike with his foraging herbal healer friend Rebecca, thank you for the getting me out into the wild, hoooowwwwwwwlllllllll). A big thank you to Rebecca for your love and support.

the Wild West of Zen

In the Wild West of Zen where the air is crisp and clean, the cowboys and cowgirls ride them horses and the cattle sing, their rhythms in sync with the seasons. Here hälts reminisces his childhood, days spent exploring the countryside, playing war in the woods, helping out with the farm, getting attacked by geese, wrestling roosters and feeding pigs. The sky never disappointed as clouds larger than life filled the sky and lightening bolts sparked a kids imagination, where did it come from ? These early years were the catalyst to a life of searching, exploring on a horse named curiosity, a spark rekindled in these moments of life.

drala in BC

Although the sun is always in the sky, what is it that causes you to look up and see that it is there? Although magic is always available, what allows you to discover it? The basic definition of drala is “energy beyond aggression.” The only way to contact that energy is to experience a gentle state of being in yourself. -‘Shambhala. The Sacred Path of the Warrior’ by Chögyam Trungpa

For the past little while hälts has been soaking up some BC magica, taking in as much as is humanly possbile while giving back to his elders, building a safe and sturdy path so they may move easily and confortably. The artistic flow enters new territory, gaining a new appreciation of the work of stone masons. Similar to painting, the act of mark making takes on 3-D form, brick to brick, stone to stone,  one step closer to final composition. There is a sense of fulfillment and happiness in this work, it will be interesting to see how this influences hälts artistic practice as he continues along the artists path.

The artist path, literally.
