Hälts Yard Art

Below is a couple of paintings that have been selected for an Imagine Asia Exhibit which takes place at CSpace Calgary May 27 until June 3rd 1-6 pm, each day. Early on in my art journey I was inspired by Japanese Art including Geishas, Manga and Kabuki Cahracters. I also was introduced to Tibetan Art by meeting Romio Shrestha in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on the Big Island of Hawai’i. It was a magical encounter and his Thangka paintings completely turned me inside out and pushed me into another direction with respect to my work. Yes I can produce work that is beautiful, emotional, and thought provoking….however I also see the capacity of art to heal and help guide others through life’s roller coaster ride. Perhaps I could easily find more mass appeal through painting landscapes or dog portraits, however I find my freedom to make art a precious gift that I am not willing to give up so easily. A couple interesting points about these works is that they both started out as live art performances. I also see the importance of transmitting the messages I have received along the path and form the places I am grateful to have visited.

Shifting Perspectives

Earth Buddha

And now some cave action, yes I crawled into a cave a friend took to me to and left some marks. Perhaps they will be preserved and rediscovered 40 000 years from now, what will that look like I wonder?

Intermission Hybrid Art

I made this hybrid art not so long ago, and a friend contacted me not long after and said this made him think synesthesia. I have often expericnced sound as colours, and apparently it is a relatively rare condition. It can also be related to and experienced in briefly during pychedelic explorations.  I mean who knows really, I think we as humans are capable of so many things that defy logic and the rational explanation, and not everything I do is related to psychedelic experience much to the surprise of people who seem to think that’s where my ideas come from. Not to discount the pyschonauts of our time, or the magic of these experiences, I have always seen the world as supernatural experience, often keeping it to myself to avoid having to explain myself.

The studio always in flux, with a new WIP (middle) inspired by a mural I made called ‘Creator’ and my hand painted shaman skateboard art as well as my Earth Buddha painting.

BC soul vitamin is key to keeping my constitution in a healthy state. I will never ever take this place for granted, it is too damn precious and magical for that to happen.

My moms garden is truly a sanctuary, the birds love it, the bees love it, the insects love it, thr frogs love it, the works love it, the plants dig it, the squirrels love it, the spiders love it, the ants love it, it’s pretty much a hit all around and inspired me to do the same back home, however my is a little smaller, baby steps.

More BC stuff coming soon, thank you and Mahalos for being here. 💚🌞❤️

Loving Kindness

Perhaps it can be said that there is not enough loving kindness in the world. This planet is filled with humans, there is hardly a place where you can go that isn’t occupied by other humans. What I find interesting is just how little we know about each other, and how this unknowing produces a lot of chaos. In my humble opinion we have been misguided by the powers that be, and this has gone on for a good long while. As advanced as technology may be, as sophisticated as humans might think themselves to be, the reality is that we are humans not much different from our early ancestors. We have created lots of things with our brains, some good, some not so good. We have technology that given the right application might be useful, whilst  we also have proven to have a knack for using the things in very destructive ways ; all in the name of FREEDOM, JUSTICE, DEMOCRACY, TRUTH, and LIBERTY. Consequently we are left with a lot of problems, which has created a need to find new solutions. Over the last decade I have listened to a many opinions about climate, about Earth, and about how things are. I feel that in a lot of cases the challenge of speaking about Earth and climate is that it is a complex system that has cycles and variations. The one constant perhaps is that is constantly revolving. I studied Earth and Climate at University, I was an average student as I didn’t agree with most of the information being spoon fed into my mouth. I realised that the real mandate for university is to capitalise on youth by promising them a bright future meanwhile forcing many into debt and destroying a lot of dreams. Now this might seem harsh, this was my experience and well nearly every person I know who went to school either made insane sacrifices or they borrowed money for a promise based on not much at all. Now I do not regret going to school, and made the most out of it. I made sure to learn things that I wanted to learn. I made sure to think critically and speak my mind, even when it was uncomfortable. It often was received with blank stares and on occasion threats of being kicked out of school. I took courses in areas of interest and that would be useful for cognition and building mindfulness. I think that we have a responsibility to ourselves to learn about each other, and all living things that call Earth home. In doing so we might begin to grasp just how interconnected we all our and even the tiniest of choices can make a tiny difference instead of doing nothing like a deer in the headlights. This life is a precious gift. It is not for the government to determine how we live or want to live, nor is it their responsibility to take care of us because if they did I would not be writing this blog. I am concerned for the welfare of humanity, I am concerned about the fact we are in a period of extinctions and our reaction has been a pretty good indication of just how little we stand by each other. This being said, there is a new wave of energy that is beginning to bring us a little closer together. By joining individual voices we learn form each other and what was once a tiny voice becomes a giant voice. The time for loving kindness is here, we can choose to keep destroying the precious gift or we can make real and simple changes that will give hope to the new generations, and all life on Earth.

city above art below

In this palace of glass, steel and concrete I roam, a bubble in the universe, where past meets present meets future. What makes us reach for the sky? What drives the city to constantly want to expand, what is the draw, the appeal of this environment?  My own interaction with the downtown is mostly task oriented, with the occasional exploratory walk or skate, depending on the weather, so as to observe the landscape and the rhythm of it’s occupants. Mostly I am fascinated with the up, looking up, it is both a marvel to behold, while also somewhat perplexing.

I have more words to write, more thoughts to share however I am going to keep this one short and sweet as I am working on a proposal for an art residency at the moment, it is currently taking most of my time and energy. The images gathered here are an ongoing look at the urban environment, always in flux and a monuments of the past, present and the future. Where is it all going, and and are we prepared to adapt to the ever changes we are seeing in our lifetime. More on that when I return for now some images to go with words.

I have been working on this painting for a month or so,  it has transformed into a new idea, however a continuation of a story, the one that got away.

wordless

Now some words from hälts pictured above….

There is a metamorphosis going on, the acknowledgement of pain and suffering as part of the experience and acceptance of its weight. Strengthen spirit, forgiveness, honouring the work done in the passing cycle and arrival to new understanding. Rebirth of compassion while seeking the underlying truth, what lies underneath the veil and exposing the light within. Channeling inner rage and fierceness  into powerful works of art without hindrance, free from fear, expectation and result. Going deep, treating painting and art with the utmost respect and honouring the gift given.

the white lodge

This is the white lodge, a place where I like to go and be one with the wonder, the beauty and the peace. Modern life is a busy life, there is so much going on in the world and it is overwhelming to the senses, the disposition and the constitution. It has been very important to my artistic practice to make an effort to get out of the studio and explore the world around me. The white lodge is where the elders live, it is the place where the eagles soar, and the ravens play. In its winter coat the white lodge sparkles and the air is crisp. I come to here to fill myself with its energy and replenish the soul, and give the heart much needed nature time, so it can recharge and gain strength for this crazy world we humans have created.

under a pale blue light

💧  I am just one drop in an ocean, keeping in mind that this produces ripples, that than travel far distances, growing into giant swell, which eventually create massive waves as they hit land. So the next time you feel small, you are, you’re life, one giant wave.

fotoMahaloness

‘pale blue dot’ this image is an interpretation and reasonable facsimile of Karl Sagan’s slogan using digital App software, we are all on a tiny  blue spaceship hurtling through space  🌍💨💨💨

‘stay with’ 🎥 a mimimotion special feature with soundscape ‘the kid within’ featuring recent cityscape nighttime timelapse footage of Calgary, and also various video Apps footage, a studio sesh timelapse, with a guest appearance by yours truly, curiosity is a keystone to my art making process, being an adult is great, releasing the inner child, priceless 👍🏼 good talk

my WIP ‘forest wolf’ which you see in the above minimotion just after a sesshin, currently working on details while eyeballing some fresh clean canvases that have been sitting patiently waiting for me to get going on some new work.

Note to artists: Some people who believed in you will eventually move on, that’s okay, new people will come along and see your brilliance with fresh eyes and heart, this is the ebb and flow of life.

minimotions in 3

Thought I would take a second and post some of my minimotions up for your viewing pleasure. These are a few of my one minute videos I put together spontaneously for Instagram, without overthinking things, and for the fun of it. I have been combining studio sesshin SLO mos and timelaspe footage with Nature footage. I work in the film industry from time to time, which takes me to stunning locations, which I usually gather timelapse footage for content, and I go to B.C. Interior and spend a lot of my time chasing around eagles and gathering timelapse and video footage there as well. Before my life as a painter I was passionate about film and have made sure to keep my passion up for the motion picture by making these minis, along with my experimental soundscapes. The advent of digital technology and innovation has made it possible to make a motion picture experience, however it is the content that makes the experience. It is quite amazing what one can do with very little, one iPad and my feet, hands and I suppose my eyes and ears…. anyway for now sit back and enjoy my little creations.

mimimotion a la Mahaloness

‘found in la paint’ 🖌 a late night minimotion special feature with soundscape ‘life goes on’ with some footage I compiled today while in process and some outdoors timelapse including the street where my mural on hillhurst hardware has beamed for the last 7 years, wowzas 🙀 and I’m growing old, anyhoot I went to enjoy my old work over a bowl of ramen at Ikemen Ramen bar in Kotwn, Calgary Alberta Canada

‘Rocky Mountain high’ 🏔 new minimotion with soundscape ‘let’s shoot it’ featuring between the scenes footage gathered in the mountains on a recent gig, and a little bit of my art mixed in, rocky mountain high, up up to the sky

‘artist hiatus’ 🎥 new minimotion with soundscape ‘when in nature’ featuring a Dali analog animation I did for a zoetrope, analog not digital, and an eagle soaring, cloud timelapse and a pink dusk, one of my painting WIPs in thermal, a hotspring and a sunset over the Purcells, all footage is from the interior BC except the animation, danka🌲
