I have gone cardboard on the brain and decided to use up a bunch of cardboard I had been hoarding, mostly cardboard that was sent to me containing art related items I had ordered for myself and was scratching my head and thinking, I should paint on this stuff and sure enough that’s what I have been up to. Also some people have been bringing me cardboard so it just keeps piling up! I just finished off the one below called ‘dalibasquiat’ which features Basquiat with a Dali stache, which I have painted on my shed which a I can see out of studio window everyday, he keeps an eye on things. I am working on a bit of a series of artists who influenced me early on in my art caree, I’m excited to see where it goes….

Been working on a new project, project Dali! Mission, make an animation for a zoetrope, life turning, seen here in the early stages of its development. It took me a little bit to get my head around it, once I did there was no turning back.

Building a desert amongst a flood.

As the weather turns serious and the local rivers flood, it is time for Mahaloness to take shelter underground. Next in the list to do, a landscape portrait, ironically of a desert environment. What began as a napkin drawing is now transmuted into a painting. As I build the desert environment I am finding that there is some interesting influences in this work. Already I sense a little bit of Dali, Monet, and Renoir, to name a few. Perhaps this landscape will be what I think I would like our home to look like, no buildings, no visible habitation, a new frontier to explore with no signs of modern life. Does this make it partially fantasy, or even a dream? Perhaps. As we fill this planet with the human mark, this type of thinking may fall in the category of romanticism, it seems to me this is no different to when Renoir was painting amidst the horrors of WWI, his paintings were playful, colourful and filled with golden light and he felt that a painter should fill the world with beauty as there is enough tragedy going on.
