Loving Kindness

Perhaps it can be said that there is not enough loving kindness in the world. This planet is filled with humans, there is hardly a place where you can go that isn’t occupied by other humans. What I find interesting is just how little we know about each other, and how this unknowing produces a lot of chaos. In my humble opinion we have been misguided by the powers that be, and this has gone on for a good long while. As advanced as technology may be, as sophisticated as humans might think themselves to be, the reality is that we are humans not much different from our early ancestors. We have created lots of things with our brains, some good, some not so good. We have technology that given the right application might be useful, whilst  we also have proven to have a knack for using the things in very destructive ways ; all in the name of FREEDOM, JUSTICE, DEMOCRACY, TRUTH, and LIBERTY. Consequently we are left with a lot of problems, which has created a need to find new solutions. Over the last decade I have listened to a many opinions about climate, about Earth, and about how things are. I feel that in a lot of cases the challenge of speaking about Earth and climate is that it is a complex system that has cycles and variations. The one constant perhaps is that is constantly revolving. I studied Earth and Climate at University, I was an average student as I didn’t agree with most of the information being spoon fed into my mouth. I realised that the real mandate for university is to capitalise on youth by promising them a bright future meanwhile forcing many into debt and destroying a lot of dreams. Now this might seem harsh, this was my experience and well nearly every person I know who went to school either made insane sacrifices or they borrowed money for a promise based on not much at all. Now I do not regret going to school, and made the most out of it. I made sure to learn things that I wanted to learn. I made sure to think critically and speak my mind, even when it was uncomfortable. It often was received with blank stares and on occasion threats of being kicked out of school. I took courses in areas of interest and that would be useful for cognition and building mindfulness. I think that we have a responsibility to ourselves to learn about each other, and all living things that call Earth home. In doing so we might begin to grasp just how interconnected we all our and even the tiniest of choices can make a tiny difference instead of doing nothing like a deer in the headlights. This life is a precious gift. It is not for the government to determine how we live or want to live, nor is it their responsibility to take care of us because if they did I would not be writing this blog. I am concerned for the welfare of humanity, I am concerned about the fact we are in a period of extinctions and our reaction has been a pretty good indication of just how little we stand by each other. This being said, there is a new wave of energy that is beginning to bring us a little closer together. By joining individual voices we learn form each other and what was once a tiny voice becomes a giant voice. The time for loving kindness is here, we can choose to keep destroying the precious gift or we can make real and simple changes that will give hope to the new generations, and all life on Earth.

Humans and Art

I recently took part in a group show in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The show was under the title ‘Humans and Art’. It featured around 180 artworks and really could easily be called a true Alberta biennale as it showcased some truly remarkable Alberta talent in visual art, performance art, sculpture and music. In Calgary it’s easy to become sceptical of the local art scene. For one it is run by some of the old guard and with all due respect, these people should of attended this show if they truly care about emerging artists in this city. Being a bit of an underground movement this will take a little time to catch on no doubt. In my humble opinion it’s better to meet a living artist and celebrate their work with the artist present, than it is to revere and celebrate dead artists. Don’t wait until we’re dead to support us, this stigma is so damn cliche and frustrating to the hard working artists who are trying to make a go of it and legitimize themselves as part of the arts and culture of Calgary. We deserve to be part of the dialogue, we have plenty to say and this wave is  growing, which most likely makes the old guard shake in their skin. For me it was a real honour to contribute to this show. It is a movement with a tonne of potential and if I were you I’d pay it some appreciation otherwise similar to movements before in this city, it will go where it is appreciated and we will lose yet another truly talented and awesome group of individuals who truly benefit the soul of the ‘small town’ that is the City of Calgary. These are just some of my thoughts, whether you agree or disagree it doesn’t matter, the point is you can’t put a price on an energy that is this positive, so make an effort to come enjoy and support the next shows, you will leave with a heart full of love and be so damn inspired, you will most likely pick up a paint brush yourself and ride the wave.

🌊 ‘Humans and Art’  a new hälts minimotion docu special with soundscape ‘SLO unravel’ featuring the @humans_and_art group show which took place May 12, 2019 and featured an incredible Alberta talent pool of artists in visual and sound, coming together in one room which reminds me of an early wave that came through Calgary many moons ago…it was a real honour to be in a room full of some truly passionate and hard working artists and also for all who came and supported, a beautiful night of celebration in the small town city of Calgary ❤️💛💚

Shoutouts to

Getting up at 4:30 am seems ridiculous, when it’s for art it’s alright with me.

The setup is a lot of work, editing 180 art works is no easy task however with a bunch of hyper talented artists working in unity you get is me pretty sweet results.
KillMidi from Lethbridge AB was one of many folk on the wheels of steel and made the room vibrate with some sweet sounds.

Yes I put art up in the entrances of the washrooms, one of my first art shows I did was in a restroom hallway, turned out to be a great place to show work, who knew…

Art is a bridge and brings us together, end of story.

‘The Symbols of Spring’ by Shanise Ford and Alexandra Jaco

Hälts in nearly all white, pre show and ready for the night, a light in the night, fresh canvas, clean slate, reclaiming spirit, pure soul, authentic to the bone and so on.

The future looks bright.

some moments from hälts pop shop

It’s hard to be bold and put yourself out there into the unknowing, that’s why I appreciate the ones who unassumingly chip away at it and do something that most would pass up for a good time.

My life lately in pictures, the hälts Pop Shop/Project Reclaim and a Bio

It has been a whirlwind of activity as of late at the hälts headquarters. As Spring nears so too does hälts begin to awake, coming out of rather long winter hibernation. I have lots in store for the month of April including my first hälts POP Shop and live art performance happening in the City of Calgary….and also worldwide as I will be doing periodic live broadcast throughout the event. I will keep this introduction short and sweet by getting right to the point of the matter. Below is information regarding an art event called hälts Pop Shop and Project Reclaim, it is a free event to the public, and runs the course of three weeks starting April 1 through to the 20th. The event kicks off with a live art performance and multimedia installation called Reclaim. This is an interactive live art experience facilitated by hälts with the intention to present an art experience that both introduces my art and process to the city of Calgary while also encouraging public interaction, and connection. In doing so I am creating a space to celebrate the human spirit.

Project Reclaim April 1-7

hälts Pop Shop April 8-21

Location: Small Space Gallery 102 424 10thSt NW Calgary, Alberta

Hälts will be introducing himself and his art to the community of Kensington at Small Space Gallery starting April 1 in a one-week performance multimedia installation. This will be followed by a 2 week hälts Pop Shop and mini art gallery April 8-21. Hälts will be in attendance for the duration of the event. Please refer to schedule on right hand side. Visitors are welcome throughout the event!

“Art is a meeting ground where we can stop and appreciate life and connect on a deeper level. This connection is very special to me and perhaps the key to my art. If I can make someone smile, or inspire and connect with the next generations through example, then that is indeed a good day.” ~hälts

Shane Haltman is a devout multi-spectrum contemporary artist. Haltman’s work deals with the human condition and represents a search for the meaning of life through art. Shane has been on a lifelong quest, exploring visual communication through an intuitive self-taught process. His work is vibrant and bright, reflecting an inner spirit that finds solace in a studio working. In his work, he offers a place for the viewer to wander freely, and explore the layers both of paint on canvas, as well as within themselves. Through his eyes the world is a vibrant dance of colours, shapes and things. By weaving several seemingly incompatible worlds into a new universe, Shane uses a visual vocabulary that addresses many different issues we face in the modern world. Preferring the title of experiential artist, he has traveled to magical and remote places leaving behind permanent mural installations. Shane received a BA in Geography from the University of Calgary and has spent his other time working as a film technician. Common themes in his work are ancient mythology, literature, dreams, Nature, city life, art history and film. Shane currently lives and works in Calgary.

winter solstice

Happy Winter Solstice, here is to the Sun and longer days, looking forward to the sun baths in the studio as I journey onwards with my current body of work. It was an interesting year, as it winds down I reflect on a great year of art and travel, time spent with family, and new friends made. Gone is the old as I empty the backpack and lighten the load, and prepare myself for what the new year has in store. This year I learned to not fight destiny and to persevere in grace, and to ride the waves and be ready for a few sets on the head, yew!

open studio project and Nature time

The journey continues, the artist within ready to explore the world outside the confines of the studio. From the studio he ventures to a crystal shop, and in doing studio walls melt away. For a good long while the artist was in an contraction  period, countless hours spent in his cave, the world shrinking, life passing by. Lost in his own world, the artist became an enigma. So the artist decided it was time to leave the cave to explore the world, connect with the people, spend as much time with Nature as possible, and prepare for the next leg of the journey.
