there is a place I like to go

I could settle for trends, or copy other styles….I have thus far chosen not to go down that path, for better or worse, it is something I have managed to bypass. This can make it difficult when it comes to my work being accepted in the now, it takes time to develop a style, it takes patience and perseverance to overcome doubt and the fear. It is imperative to not give in to these factors, and have faith that somehow it will work out. It is also a good idea to get out of the studio from time to time and recharge the soul, the mind, and the heart space.

‘towards silence’ 👂 a new minimotion with soundscape ‘cat dreams’ from busy city to a mountain peace, I find myself on a road less travelled, where clouds drift gracefully, putting mind at ease, I hope you like it, and well ✌️

There is something to be said for slowing things down and letting things happen, everything happening just as it is supposed to without interfering the natural cycle, and allowing the artist within to be

These are some panoramas of a place I go to in B.C. to disconnect from city life and remind myself that there is a whole other world going on, this place, this planet, provides us with so much and yet there are some who want to continue to do harm in the name of economy, and growth, with little to no plan for the consequences which you and I will pay for. So I am grateful for these moments, when it’s just me and the eagles, the clouds, the water, sky, and the trees, and all of the sounds, the wind as it dances though the trees, the sounds of ravens free falling, oh what a gift, so I come here and pay my respects, because there’s no guarantees it will last.

Room 237

When I am painting I am recollecting the moments that made my heart shine and my soul sing.

special feature extended minimotion

‘237’ with soundscape ‘thinking of you’ featuring some gathered footage from a year of road trips and adventure, and finding the the voice so as to channel through the paint. The painting slomo is my WIP ‘SLO’ which is a working title and the animation is called ‘hug ad infinitum

Lately I have also been making a go at baking, taking the time to learn new things and growing as a human being. I picked the apples from a neighbours tree in BC, collected spring water, and used only the best ingredients I could find, it worked out and now I can add a new hat to my wrack, as I predict there will be more of this to come as winter sets in. Pie and painting, a very good combination indeed.

Flashback

This is a bus I painted back in 2011, it is the largest solo project to date and one that I questioned heavily for years whether it was worth the blood, sweat and tears. It did change my life in many ways, and has been the catalyst for many paintings and commissioned projects. I think I will find some time this winter to sit and write about my story now that I feel I am able to do so.

traveling artist (part 2)

Q: What is the purpose of your trip?

A: To spend time observing the ocean, stand with a few of the remaining old growth forests, and with a little bit of luck decompress.

As I wonder along an elusive path hidden by tall grasses I trust my instincts and find my way to an opening. In front of me a sandy beach flanked by sculpted sand dunes, and a lonely sea gull gliding effortlessly with the cold Pacific breeze. This morning is calm, puffy white clouds drift by, and tide is low heading towards high. The saltiness of the air is refreshing to the senses, as the land and the sea remind me just how magnificent this planet is.

‘gone to sea’ a new hälts minimotion with soundscape ‘taking time’ featuring footage captured by me while in Nahalem, Oregon, while on road trip up the coastline towards Canada, which is North, eh.

I could spend a century wondering these beaches with relative stationary sand dunes, staring out to sea, and bringing it back in to observe the tiny elements that make up this fascinating ecosystem. The one thing I have always noticed about the Oregon coast is the cooler temperatures especially when there is a sea breeze, thankfully there are many natural and human aided structures to take some shelter and a poncho can go a long ways.

And now for a new feature on Mahaloness, a look back at my work from the hälts art archives….

Over the years I have been very fortunate to work on commission work. This is a very rewarding part of my art because one it pays the bills, and also I have a chance to work so many great people who we artists call ‘patrons’. Without patrons artist would not thrive, both now and historically speaking. It is through these commission paintings that I have been able to hone in on my skills and push my comfort zones with respect to the subject matter. For the most part I have gotten most of my work through word of mouth, and some commissions through social media. This did not happen overnight, even though there were times I wish it did. Usually my commission work starts with a meeting, where I sit down with my clients and we discuss what it is they want and I try to offer my expertise and knowledge based on my experience. I do tend to work intuitively so learning how to communicate this to clients has taken some time, in terms of earning there trust, while also in keeping  with their vision. Through the process I tend to share updates and occasionally will have studio visits, which are really quite fun and satisfying, especially when the client is stoked with what they see, this makes the work less stressful and the patron feels like they are part of the process. What I would like to do in future posts is write about some of these commissions specifically as they do have stories that go above and beyond the paintings themselves. Lastly, I will be starting a new chapter with Mahaloness and interviewing people from various walks of life, especially areas that I am particularly interested in as an artist, so more on that in future posts, for now enjoy the commissions and may Mahaloness be with you.

Here are a few commissions from the hälts archives.

self discovery

I have lived mostly a revolutionary life. There is a glamour to that on surface level that makes me seem interesting to some, and to have lived a ‘fast’ life. For me though it is as if I am standing on a beach, with the sea gently caressing its shoulder and in the distance there is a sailing yacht with the name, ‘wife, white picket fence, kids, and a home’ sailing away into a stunning sunset. This has been my choice, and with that comes a price, for the unknown is daunting and challenges even the deepest primordial instincts, not to mention societal pressure to conform. This is the reality of every person who walks the less travelled path, who willingly goes there to explore themselves in an effort perhaps to learn about oneself, and to experience on their own terms, life’s lessons, and with that the choice to adjust their settings accordingly. This is a life long practice, and takes patience, stamina, perseverance, determination, amongst so many things…. and one has to be motivated to do this on their own volition. The way to get to point a to b is not exactly ideal, there is multitude of things that can and will come up that will challenge ones constitution and disposition. Finding a way to reach a desired outcome that both respects my self interest as well as the other is imperative to a positive experience, having learned both ways I can see the utility in this. This is where I will be focusing on for while, following a period of perhaps self induced pain and suffering as a reaction to certain desires not being met, at least the way I wanted them to, this is in all probability the hardest thing to acknowledge, and there exists a myriad of ways to avoid this aspect of reality, and that’s coming from experience. Self awareness is a life skill that enables us, the ‘seeker’, to navigate unchartered waters, metaphorically speaking, and extends to our place in our community, including family and friends. This is what’s been in my mind of late in this period of solitude I find myself in. I think it’s more than likely I will continue to write about this in posts to come. This also might seem a little raw, it is, as I work out exactly what it is a I want to say. Until next here is some more of my art from recent and past. Enjoy and be well!

One of my desires as an artist is to go to the other side and bring back knowledge in order to help serve humankind.

playing with paper cut outs as I start a new watercolour, always honing my skills, pushing myself to go that extra distance🕯 underneath is a vision quest rock art I was fortunate enough to visit a couple years ago, spine tingling kind of stuff, always good to pay respects to where art has come from.

🌝 a new hälts minimotion, ‘eclipse of the illusion part 2’ with soundscape ‘early spring’ 🌿 featuring a new animation ‘jaguar eye’, a praying mantis that came to visit hälts during a paint sesh, and a few clips from @espressokino movie night, the Japanese have a way of getting under your skin and deep into the psyche, and a couple watercolur WIP seshs, enjoy and let the illusion go…what would life be if we could actually be free, who knows, so it goes.

peasant art print minimotion special feature

The journey continues, hälts has been spending a healthy amount of time in the forest realm, visiting lakes and rivers, and looking up to the sky. These experiences bring hälts much joy and the connection to the land, sky and water energizes, bringing a sense of alertness and awareness, which can get comfortable when in the city for long periods of time. In the city realm hälts been working diligently on a live painting project called ‘the healer’ at Calgary New Age Books and Crystals. Each brush stroke is in tune with his natural experiences and mirrors the last part of the painting pilgimage. As ‘the healer’ reaches the completion of its cycle, hälts is drawn into contemplation, remembering all the beautiful people he met along the way, new and old, young and ancient, a blessed experience. At the moment(s) hälts is hosting a print sale at Calgary New Age store, the display features a vast array of artworks, both originals and hybrid art, combining painting and the digital realms. His art is more than just a picture, it is a transmission of story, information, revelations, contemplations, wonder and observations. Come on down and say hello, hälts will be selling his prints, and artworks, and plans on continuing a live painting through to December. Calgary New Age Books and Crystals is located at 104 10 St NW Calgary, hälts is there 12-5 daily, or find him on Instagram for updates, more art, and Mahaloness all the way brah.

restless spirit

It has been a bit since I sat down a wrote some words so here goes….
I have been thinking about you

Not a moment goes by when I don’t miss you

Walking along a busy road

Cars passing

Anonymous

human contact is what I long

Your contact

Sleepless nights
Restless spirit

Searching for peace and resolution

Practicing loving kindness

catching thoughts before they produce actions

that cannot be reversed

What happen to the spark

Where did it go

Did I really lose sight

Of what makes life worth living

The happiness

The hope

Digging

 I am looking for courage

Anything to let these thoughts go

As past pulls me back

I walk forward

I must find a way to go on.

a flower child in dark times

I was talking to a friend today about some artist woes, the attempt to sustain art in a world that demands you to play by its rules, he simply said to me,

‘Dude I hear you. You are an artist making his way in a world that batters you. This is a storm now bro. Its gonna take time. You are confronted with a meaningless reality. Society tries to pound meaning into it for us. But resist bro! Make your own meaning. Im here as buddy.’

To this hälts replies Mahaloness, and a deep soulful thank you, carry on!
