life right now

I have been looking to space a lot. There is so much to see and yet so much beyond my capacity to comprehend, the infinite unseen and unknowing, the frontiers of my humanness that when discovered open doors to an ancient past nearly made extinct.

And now a hälts minimoiton ‘bee see soul’ with soundscape ‘zero’ and featuring a day in the life of this here artist in the BC zone.

Look into my eyes, look into my soul, what do you see? For if you see what you only want to see you will miss the golden nugget that is my heart and soul.

And now some BC moments

Molly’s Secret Garden

Help out your elders….

A little duck aerovane restoration project I have been working on for the elder’s garden shed. This buddhy has seen more than 2 decades so no surprise it was in a little disrepair. Only one wing worked since day one. Now that I have restored the paint it’s time to figure out the wings so they both spin when the wind visits. Crossing my fingers, pretty sure I got this…

Simple tools do the job

One way I like to connect with my true self is on the water, on my fish, even when there’s no waves, it makes me feel human, it rekindles my spirit and washes away the bullshit that humans like to create in order to make drama that only leads to more suffering and sorrow, not good for the spirit, it is imperative to get a cleanse in the river, in the lake, in the ocean, in the water, anywhere where the water be.

time travel

To keep words to a minimum which perhaps might seem counterintuitive to a blog called WordPress… as the old saying goes a photo says a thousand words and my minimotions multiply that tenfold. First up some flora from my mom’s magic garden. I have been blessed all these years with her green thumb wizardry, a true sanctuary it is, so peaceful and easy on the eyes, nose, ears, touch, mind, soul….

And now a couple of minimotions including on the road footage from a recent film job I was on, travelling back in time.

Everything comes around and goes around; forgetting, letting go, moving onwards is futile until one finds it within themselves to forgive and be forgiven.

Lastly and no less important than anything else shared on this post I wanted to continue to remind and or introduce folks to my new website haltsart.com which features my art on very useful items with you in mind, all made in Canada and with 100 % pure Aloha.

I think therefore I paint

Over the course of my artistic practice I have been thinking about what it means to be a painter. Some artists believe they were born to paint. Others were born into paint. While some artists are just enigmas, and we may never really know why they made the art they did. So why paint? What should I paint? Who am I painting for? Am I any good? These are good questions to ask yourself, however in the act of doing these tend to become irrelevant. In the act of being a painter my intuition takes over, which is higher state of self that I have come to know and trust in my work. This is a good thing as there is a lot of uncertainty involved in the process which the doubting mind loves to feed on. It is key to see things through, this has been my life motto, even when all seems lost, and nothing is going right, I keep working through it, and this has been a real area of discovery for me.

My curiosity with painting is perhaps the mystery of painting in itself. I can’t help myself but be drawn to the mystery and, I have made it my life’s purpose to explore it. I have focused on learning ways to make pictures that are genuine hälts; with all the weirdness, the magic, the sorrow, the joy; the nuances of being human whilst living in these silly world. I am by no means well known, however I make art that is both beautiful, celebrated and adorned by some very beautiful humans out there who through chance I have had the great pleasure to meet in this lifetime.

Side note and after thoughts on painting….

I once met a man who believed our lives are predetermined, such that we have no say in our destiny. I am more inclined to believe we do have the capacity to steer our own ship, however there is a flow and rhythm to life, so determining how you want to ride through it is a good starting point. My ship happens to be art, and my main sail is painting. Art has some pretty deep roots to tap into and even after all these years of practice I have yet to fully understand it. Art remains to me a truthful experience documenting life’s mystery and just as winters reveal bits of the truths about ourselves, mark by mark, painting by painting I am revealing my experience. This may not be your experience however surely there is some common ground, that which defies the rational, and hits on some deeper spiritual level. In my practice I am expressing my truth, my inner light, and channeling what gos through my mind. This perhaps is not too disimliar to what my ancient ancestors were doing when they painted on a cave wall. When I work I am very aware of my feelings, my mood, my thoughts and my spirit. This in part is what I am communicating along with the mystery, the unknown and the irrational.

We only get this one.

hälts hybrid art

The following three images demonstrate how I use my drawing and paper cut outs to get composition, I do use modern technology as well but this method is tried, true and tested.

just the ever so slightest adjustment to the garment

At this stage I am respecting my first marks made, before I continue on with the work. This is the stage where my brain switches to 3-D as I bring the subject to life. I will trust my drawings but also let the paint show me what’s possible.

Creative Worker

I am a difficult stubborn human being with a heart of gold. I bare many scars, I must of been a warrior in another life. I am a human who chose to take the path of art, with no specific goal, just to be in the present and create as much art as a I can in this short lifetime. I fall in love too easily, this has created a few masterpieces. I often paint for hours on end, and take intermittent smoke breaks in the alley way. I like to stare up at the stars at night and take in the glow of the moon. I love peanut butter on toast, and boil my eggs for 9 minutes, which seems to be the perfect amount of time. When I am not painting I drink coffee, and make things to eat. I once put a girlfriend in a painting, I have since stopped that practice. I have worked with humans with terminal illnesses. I have held a man’s hand in his dying moments. I like to paint with Otis, the next generation, he gives me advice on life and teaches me patience. In a matter of speaking I am a ghost, unknown, right in front of you, even though you would say you never saw me. They say every man needs a companion, I guess mine has been painting, steady, always there when I need her, and puts up with my moods, she seen me at my worse and best, and yet always there, omnipresent. It is a mystery as to why I ended up an artist, I guess you could say it was fate. It seems to me that there is still plenty of Mystery left in the world. I have tended to pay close attention to what’s going around me. Whether it is a look on someone’s face, a smile, a tear, a far away stare in the reflection of a train window, a bird in the tree, this is the pulse that I am interested in. I have long been an observer of things, watching the world unfold before my eyes, which by all accounts is directed by an insatiable curiosity. It’s as if I have Orson Welles directing the picture show that is my life, capturing the accidental moments, strange happenings, this is normal for me. I see things that most miss, not because they can’t see it, they are distracted by touch screens and neurotic scrolling, looking for something better than their mundane existence. This mundane is only mundaneness because we have lost the joy of our being in the moment. We are chasing dreams, or running away fromh things, depending on how you look at it. Perhaps this is why time flies, were always seeking the next bend, the next big thing, that will save us from our loneliness. Orson Welles said it best, “love and friendship is the nearest thing that we can find to create the illusion that we are not totally alone.” Well my friends I am happily alone to be me in this world that spins around and around, no beginning, no end, cycling with the cycles, writing blogs and making art in between.

Now a foto to go with words above and a new minimotion.

a little reminiscing

A poem for the moment.
Hope you find what your searching for my darling

I hope you find these things

Because a new beginning is what you needed
fotoMahaloness

This is what it’s like to paint for me, I drift in and out, from the here now, to those moments when I was healing my soul from the grind and filling my artistic cup with the jam that keeps me going. I hope you like it, the soundscape is ’painter pilgrimage’ Enjoy! 📽  ‘painter man’ with soundscape ‘painter pilgrimage’

This is me in contemplation. I have been working on this WIP called ‘SLO’ for months and months, I am so close to finishing this painting. I have been working with a bit of a heavy heart, I will not complain it is a part of life that we love to sugar coat and throw inspirational quotes at, however the only way to get through things is to let it pass, the art of letting go, non attachment, impermanence. Sometimes I sit for hours with a brush in hand, it is natural to have thoughts during these moments, thoughts about life, art, people, lovers, family, friends, the ocean, you know thoughts. This has been my journey, a painter pilgrimage, I guess it’s my way of passing through life with a sense of dignity and grace, because one cannot know grace without also knowing folly. Although I have my days when I want to walk away from this practice, I wonder what life would be if I had never picked up a paint brush, it seems implausible, because it is. I will never forget the day I told my sister, ‘I am going to be an artist!’, and she replied, ‘you already are.’ So keep on my friends, find a way, and make art not war. (Artwork: the red bicycle by Raya Monroe, bought this painting form a young artist back in the day, it makes me smile, and my watercolour ‘the Shalu kid’)

And a few moments in time with my WIP ‘SLO’

I like to sit and paint next to Rothko.

flashback

A rather old digi painting I made, I love waves, I love the ocean, it brings me great joy of being, soon I will be out again in its frothiness, duck diving waves and with a little luck, getting shacked.
