hälts went Raw

Wow!! That was a busy few weeks, a bee hive of activity and long nights of making marks and finishing work! All this in preparation for ENVISION, put on by Raw Artists, which was held last week in Calgary. It was a successful night of celebrating the arts with a wide array of disciplines showcasing their stuff. There was so much energy in the room! I got right into it with some live painting and brought a nice selection of my art including my cherished painting ‘the Healer’, which did garner a lot of attention. There is no better feeling than to see people connect with my art. It makes all the hard work worth it, and trust me there is a lot of details in my art and it is best to see in person, in order to get the full experience. I think it’s important to point out that my intention is to make art that continually surprises you, and the details are meant to be revealed to the viewer over time. You will not get the same effect viewing my art on a computer screen.

At ENVISION, I also displayed a series of paintings on recycled cardboard, which were fun pieces for me to make, they are more in my street style, using techniques I would typically use for my murals. The cardboard series features artists who inspired me early on in my career such as Jackson Pollock and Frida Kahlo. I do have plans to continue the series and will branch out to writers, thinkers, and so on, all in due time. I also brought an assortment of  Ltd. Ed. wood prints, Fine Art Prints, and art cards, which feature a range of my paintings and hybrid art. Over the next month I will be sharing some of those with you and fill you in on how to get your hands on these rare treasures. I do very small batches and this keeps them extra special. I will be releasing a series of Ltd Ed. Prints of some of my newer work and will announce that in upcoming posts as well.

Preview of my art cards perfect for sending a letter to the beloveds

Finally, my art brings vitality and spirit into any room. My paintings and prints alike are enjoyed and appreciated by many folks out there, which is why I put so much love and attention into each one. For now enjoy some images of work, some shots from ENVISION and beginning with a recent minimotion.

🖌     I have come a long way since the day I decided to make art my life. I have gone about it in my own way and have been able to develop my own voice amongst a world of influence, pressure, conditioning, a rather difficult and unregulated art market, the low probability of making it as a career, the outside influences and factors that an artist has little to no control of, and so on…. all these things have to be put to the back of the mind if one wants to make art that is meaningful and enduring, so to this I say, stand up tall!’ and the good news is, I am here to stay and make art until I am unable, hopefully that never happens. (foto by Agent R, and illustrated by hälts, taken while live a painting at ENVISION, which was a great celebration of the Canadian art held in Calgary a couple days ago)

live art sesshin on recycled cardboard, doing what I can to use less new materials and add new life to something otherwise treated like a throw away item, my sister jumped in at the opportunity and made some marks of her own, I have made it a practice to pass my paint brush to people and let them go to town.

‘expressing spirit’ 🖌 I think my art is my spirit, the expression of spirit, and those who I connect with through my art are kindred spirit, and this is a really cool thing about art. winter solstice

Happy Winter Solstice, here is to the Sun and longer days, looking forward to the sun baths in the studio as I journey onwards with my current body of work. It was an interesting year, as it winds down I reflect on a great year of art and travel, time spent with family, and new friends made. Gone is the old as I empty the backpack and lighten the load, and prepare myself for what the new year has in store. This year I learned to not fight destiny and to persevere in grace, and to ride the waves and be ready for a few sets on the head, yew!

Feature Presentation

In the meantime and in between time hälts makes art, and sometimes works on a film set as grip helping out with sweet dolly moves with occasional sips of coffee. The art lately has been all about the cardboard, taking boxes previously used for shipping art and turning that into art. Interestingly enough the process is quite satisfying and surprisingly cost effective. There is a long tradition of painting on cardboard, especially when times have been tough, wartime, Great Depression, and these types of life occurrences have forced artists to be resourceful, and that’s all right. Sometimes less is more, it makes you appreciate the small things in life instead of the Guam nfilly of treating everything as expendable, and putting the brake on a throw away society, because Earth is worth it, it is our only home and home to many things, not just human, which is something that gets forgotten in the daily grind of the hustle and bustle.

First up a new minimotion ‘Feature Presentation’ with soundscape ‘Wolfy’ which features a real sweet dolly move, hälts in the studio, some sharks animations, and a bunny battle royale.

lone wolf

First off just want to honour the women of Earth and Mother Earth, thank you💚🌿 (hälts mural ‘creator’ there’s a paradise in my mind and the cosmos in my hand)
The road less travelled opens one to possiblilities that can be fruitful. However there is also a chance for chaos, uncertainty and doubt. Knowing this be mindful that there have been ones before, mavericks, rogues, lone wolves…learn about them, read about them, watch documentaries if that’s useful to you. Keep in mind though that no one’s path is the same path, it is a complex weave and you are one strand in that weave. This metaphor is useful to visualize, how do you want to weave your thread, how do want to add to the pattern, or what pattern are you going to follow, there is no right question, no right answer, there is only you on that path. Trust you can do it, be discerning of advice, that’s wisdom, you’ll get it, educate yourself, and remember life’s problems are not so much problems as they are experience, they teach us things that we can learn from, sometimes they repeat themselves, and can be unpleasant, you’ll get through it, and hopefully so will this weirdo, hälts💚🌿📿☕️

illusion part one

‘the illusion of fame’ 🐪 hälts late night minimotion with soundscape ‘something missing’ this is a little bit of a contemplative piece which features lady Pacifica, hand drawn hälts original animation (Shamans journey), candle light, quick clip from Esprrsso Kino, a room, a man, and the sky🐛
In this part of the world we live in excess, everyday taking for granted this precious planet we have the privilege to live on, when I see images of whales with stomachs full of garbage, plastic mainly, shark nets and their inherit indiscriminate ability to kill harmless beautiful creatures like all in the name of protecting human life, well I do not abide. Nuclear sites that every day are leaking radiation into the soil, the water, the air, it makes my blood boil. The thing is we are so distracted by the news and our minds that we lose sight of the fact every single one of us is contributing in one way or another, so I guess that begs the question, how do you want to contribute? I have lived a fairly good life, I have had my peaks, my valleys, and have spent time in the shadows in an attempt to understand my self in an effort to find how I can contribute with the time I have left in this life. I want to understand how I can act in this society, without perpetuating the hate, the anger, and the frustration, breaching the veil, or simply just believing the illusion that life is good, let’s face it, life is many things, the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly. Yes there is magic, there is also honest folks out there trying to make the most of it, despite the reports that we are doomed, and that humanity has lost sight of its own humanity. I can fully admit that I have had my own stuggles and botched attempts, I have been blacklisted, I have denied, I have been rejected many times. The only thing that keeps me going is that little bit of optimism, that I have the power within to make a difference in this world, despite either thinking or being told that is not possible. Life is not black and white, there is an array, full spectrum portals of opportunity, and discovery. The human imagination, our dreams, our wishes, our feelings, our goals, are all valid, the more we expose these, talk about them, the closer we get to understanding each other, by turinign our backs, and forgetting, we only let things acrue and gain strength, which in the long run will make our lives more difficult, so from my standpoint being an outlier on that curve is critical, and necessary, as difficult as it may be.

and a few projects I have on the go right now, mostly watercolor…and a couple finished works from the past, interesting to look back occasionally and see where you came from, not too much, just a little bit.

the path

Art is journey, it is all encompassing, always changing, one might even say transforming. In this lifetime there is only so much time, so small sacrifices are made in order to make healing, positive, meaningful art. What goes in is what will come out, and to be self aware is a vital part of the process. Tapping source and Nature exploration is necessary, while letting the subconscious be what it is, mindfully aware of how it  dances. Finding balance in a world with seemingly endless information is helpful, it is easy to be overwhelmed. There is an urgency to get things done because time seems fleeting and life demands, the essential practice is to breathe, ground and remain in a state of calm in the storm.  This is a daily practice that wavers and undulates, constantly learning and growing, this is the the path hälts is on.
