history

This is a story of a man who was set free, and who is know on a voyage of self discovery and peace. Following years of trials and tribulations he never gave up, there were close calls, there were some deep troughs, he always pulled through. It is in his journey that he discovered there is a divine force that has been with him all along that has guided him through the darkness and illuminated him so he was able to find his way. This is a form of liberation because he realized that he had been carrying a heavy pack and the weight was not his to carry. He has forged ahead with renewed vigour and slowly his heart returns to a healthy state, his spirit reclaimed, under the watchful eyes of his spirit ancestors. When the world gets you down just remember that you too have this with you, omnipresent, always, so continue on, empty the weight that is not ours to carry, respect yourself, sing to yourself, dance, love, laugh, go to the inner temple and revere yourself. There is a light in all of us, there is a sparkle in every humans eye, there is potential to turn things around, and this is a powerful insight that I share with you.

It’s been a busy time for me as of late in the studio, working on finishing paintings, making minimotions and reclaiming spirit.

a little reminiscing

A poem for the moment.
Hope you find what your searching for my darling

I hope you find these things

Because a new beginning is what you needed
fotoMahaloness

This is what it’s like to paint for me, I drift in and out, from the here now, to those moments when I was healing my soul from the grind and filling my artistic cup with the jam that keeps me going. I hope you like it, the soundscape is ’painter pilgrimage’ Enjoy! 📽  ‘painter man’ with soundscape ‘painter pilgrimage’

This is me in contemplation. I have been working on this WIP called ‘SLO’ for months and months, I am so close to finishing this painting. I have been working with a bit of a heavy heart, I will not complain it is a part of life that we love to sugar coat and throw inspirational quotes at, however the only way to get through things is to let it pass, the art of letting go, non attachment, impermanence. Sometimes I sit for hours with a brush in hand, it is natural to have thoughts during these moments, thoughts about life, art, people, lovers, family, friends, the ocean, you know thoughts. This has been my journey, a painter pilgrimage, I guess it’s my way of passing through life with a sense of dignity and grace, because one cannot know grace without also knowing folly. Although I have my days when I want to walk away from this practice, I wonder what life would be if I had never picked up a paint brush, it seems implausible, because it is. I will never forget the day I told my sister, ‘I am going to be an artist!’, and she replied, ‘you already are.’ So keep on my friends, find a way, and make art not war. (Artwork: the red bicycle by Raya Monroe, bought this painting form a young artist back in the day, it makes me smile, and my watercolour ‘the Shalu kid’)

And a few moments in time with my WIP ‘SLO’

I like to sit and paint next to Rothko.

flashback

A rather old digi painting I made, I love waves, I love the ocean, it brings me great joy of being, soon I will be out again in its frothiness, duck diving waves and with a little luck, getting shacked.

inside out

The days are getting shorter, I am getting older, and there are many paintings to finish. Recently I have dove head first into the abstract expressionism, as I have some things I need to express. This is where I started, abstract, black and white, which I was exposed to by the likes of Franz Kline and the New York School of Abstract. I related to their work and began to study their work in books, on the Internet, and museum visits in New York. At times there is a conflict inside of me between the rational and irrational, black and white, similar to an ocean, it is dynamic, always in flux. There is emotion that as a man often times gets blocked out of the necessity to survive the day to day, and the need to keep it together in real life. Even in the studio I am often concentrating on specific artwork and subject matter. I have developed a tendency to block my personal life from my work. In some ways I lose myself in my work and forget about the life stuff that weighs on my shoulders. I decided recently to challenge that rule, and let some of that stuff out. This is the content for my new minimotion which offers a glimpse into the beginning of an expressive painting. I hope you will enjoy it.

minimotion

‘b&w’ with soundtrack ‘working out some stuff’ featuring a expression sesshin in the studio recently, a painting on recycled cardboard as my substrate, which is a metaphor as much as an environmental choice, painting yet to be titled🕶

untitled WIP in hälts studio fort

‘desert dweller’ a hybrid artwork combining my WIP painting ‘SLO’ and a painting titled ‘pirate’s oasis’

‘forest wolf’ a painting WIP started out as a live painting that I have now been working on in the studio. I introduced a subject similar to one from a mural called ‘Creator’ see below for that reference.

This is my mural called ‘Creator’ made a couple years ago, I decided to incorporate a similar sunpbject into my new painting above.
