seigan (vow)

…that we treat things with care, devote ourselves to our work, love those we encounter, and take concern for society, never for greed or fame. -Kosho Uchiyama Reshi

As we move into a new cycle it seems fitting to renew a vow with this world I inhabit. The challenges faced up to this moment have provided me with wisdom which I will draw from as I continue along this journey. As I return to my artistic path, I acknowledge the many wonderful people out there in the world who have supported me in a variety of ways, along the way. I pay my respects to those individuals and communities who presently do the good work, as well as giving gratitude to those who have done the work before me, here and elsewhere.

I pledge to pay it forward.

buena energia

Everything I see, touch, smell, taste, hear and feel is energy for energy percolates, pervades, penetrates, permeates in everything, every being, everywhere and elsewhere.

Following a rendezvous with some friends I find myself sipping a coffee in a cafe cinema chocolate shop. There is a wall mural, it is my first real introduction to the art of this region, it hits my sensibilities with a right left combo, as the ghosts of genius past observe my every move, it is good energy. I walk into a small screening room, the smell of stale popcorn fills my nose and I take a seat looking at what appears to be an empty screen soon filled with a telepathic picture of whats to come.

head spin (continuation of a Southern journey..)

side note: sometimes you come across an album that speaks to the soul…

“I held onto a penance I didn’t deserve.”
-Half Moon Run ‘Unofferable’ from the album ‘Dark Eyes’

meanwhile a Southern journey continues…

I arrive in Puerto Escondido and immediately give thanks to Lady Guadalupe. A few artist musician gypsy folk, who were also in the van from Rio Grande, are kind enough to help me out with my bearings. I grab my bags from the back, say ‘gracias’ to the driver and walk into a town that is absolutely alive. The first thing that hits you here is the all pervading smell. I make my way up a busy street lined with businesses and street vendors. I find my way to an internet cafe and following a few minor technical difficulties make contact with friends who I will be staying with. It has been two days completely free of communication, no wifi, no phones, liberating on many levels. I make a call and am given instructions to head to Playa Zicatela, the Mexican Pipeline, and find a place called Los Tios. I leave the internet place, walk to the side of a busy street and flag down a ride. I find myself in a taxi, my head spinning from the whirlwind of a journey, while simultaneously taking in the new surroundings. I can’t help but feel I am having a Bill Murray moment as the taxi flies through town. In the back of my mind I wonder what life would be without these moments. Somehow in the midst of the chaos I am able to find peace, I have travelled here to find new rhythm, to submerge into Lady Pacifica and let go of some things that have been on my mind for far too long.

portrait moderno

Todo fluye, todo se mueve, todo interactúa y va hacia el futuro y vuelve al pasado como en un círculo sin principio ni fin.

Everything flows, everything moves, everything interacts and moves toward the future and returns to the past like a circle without beginning or end.

Southern Journey will continue soon for those of you following that story, occasionally I like to branch off in new directions, no doubt it will weave its way back in seamlessly, thank you for your patience.

Just by chance

never underestimate yourself

The bus slows to a crawl as we enter some dusty town. I look out my window, there is tuks tuks zooming around, they’re carrying everything from humans to chickens. The bus comes to a halt. The bus driver turns to inform us that there is some kind of a road block ahead, all large vehicles, delivery vehicles, and buses are out of luck. I have no idea who is blocking the road, my first instinct is to get my stuff together and keep moving forward in a safe and efficient manner. As I get off the bus I ask the driver how long until were moving again, he gives me a look I have seen before, I say ‘gracias’. I look down a dusty street and ‘just by chance’ I see a large man announcing ‘Puerto Escondido!’, we make eye contact and seem to understand each other. I quickly grab my bag from the belly of the beast that the driver has opened, I say ‘buenos dias’ and make a run for the van, dodging vehicles, tuk tuks and dogs along the way. I get across the road and make my way down the busy street towards the man. He points to fairly small white van, I throw my stuff in the back and climb into the side. The van fills up quickly, and there is a man securing some goods on the roof. The man jumps down, the door closes he jumps in and and were off. I am feeling alive. As we move forward we come up to what looks to be Coca Cola trucks and gas trucks sitting on the edge of the road, there is people scattered everywhere, hard to make out whose who and whats what, I feel waves of anxiety so I take a moment to say a few thank yous to Lady Guadalupe. As we pull through the crowds on the street we are stopped by a group of people and I have a really hard time hearing the conversation. Best to just let this one play out, I have a good feeling, this keeps fears at bay. The group lets us pass we weave are way back to the highway and were off like a rocket, or at least as fast as this van can go in between topes. I am smiling.

awake

I am fully awake and taking in every ounce of the scenery. The bus weaves it’s way through green country, occasionally opening up to grazing feilds, rivers and lakes. There is a feeling you get when things are new, I have this feeling now. As I head deeper south my identity slowly dissolves away. The bus stops in whats looks to be a small town and I get my first comedor experience. I look to see what’s on the menu, the bus driver helps me out with my choice and says carne! I accept my fate and it is delicious and fully satisfying. The smell here is incredible, a mix of smoke and the food hits me with a one two punch ¡Gusto Oaxaca!

Following a roadside eating experience I get back on the bus for the final leg of my journey, next stop Puerto Escondido…
